Disk Utility and DiskWarrior “Freeze”

I have a LaCie 500 GB external FireWire drive. All of the files on the drive seem to be working fine. I can read/write with no problem.

However, I occasionally will run Disk Utility (Apple, v 10.5.6) and/or DiskWarrior (v 4.0) for maintenance. Now, both of these utilities “hang up.” Both of these applications run fine on other disks.

Specifically, Disk Utility progresses as follows:

Verify and Repair disk “LaCie Disk A (old)”
Checking HFS Plus volume.
Checking Extents Overflow file.
Checking Catalog file.

and then hangs when checking the Catalog file (eg, the blue bar at the screen quits progressing, even after an hour). In the old days before this problem started, it would verify/repair the disk in 5 minutes or less. After a few hours I’ll hit the “Stop Repair” button and I exit from the process, so it’s not a true system hang. However, the disk icon (which is removed from the desktop as Disk Utility starts repairing the disk) never reappears on the desktop.

DiskWarrior also freezes. This occurs whether or not I run DiskWarrior from the CD or from my internal hard drive (Apple G4 PPC 867 MHz running OS 10.4.10). DIskWarrior freezes at Step 6, “Constructing Optimized Replacement Directory", with the blue progress bar ~½ way across. This issue is a true system hang, since I have to Force Quit to exit from DiskWarrior and all I see is the SBBOD (spinning beach ball of death).

Perhaps all of this means that I have a serious fault on this LaCie FW drive. However, I’ve never run into something like this before; usually I get some kind of error message or information. In addition, the disk seems to behave just fine during routine use.

Can anyone tell me what this means?

Thank you!

I can tell you one thing it means....get another HD as fast as you can and copy all your files over to it, then check it with Disk Warrior 4.x to ensure your files are in good shape. If you can backup that backup, do so, then format your original drive, writing zeros to the entire drive with Disk Utility. Your drive may be fine but a catalog or some low level nonsense is hosed to be sure. Amazing that you can still access your files.
