Why does my screen go black during calls?

MacBook Pro Mac OS X (10.4.6)
Why does my screen go black during calls? As I talk the screen turns completely black, making it impossible to select "end call" or any other feature. Pressing buttons or tapping the screen has unpredivtable results. Thank you.

At the top of the phone, where the speaker is in the slot. There is a sensor that senses when the phone is placed near your ear. This sensor shuts down the screen so you don't accidentally hit a key or another while on a phone call. Just remove the phone from your ear and the screen should light back up. Make sure you don't have your hand over that sensor or it may not work. 😀
