Earthlink email trouble on iPhone

Can anyone help me? I'm unable to send or receive earthlink email on my iPhone.

The error message for incoming email is:
"The connection to the server "pop.earthlink.net:110" failed."

The incoming mail server host name is: "pop.earthlink.net:110"

The error message for outgoing email is:
"Check the account settings for the outgoing server "smtpauth.earthlink.net"

The Outgoing mail server host name is: smtpauth.earthlink.net:587

Also -
-I did select "pop" when setting up the account.
-SSL is ON for incoming and outgoing
-Authentication is set to "password"
- I checked my password with earthlink and have it right

I'm at a loss and not quite sure who to call. Earthlink's response is that they can't help me. They think I should call AT&T, which I'm about to do, but I'm not expecting help there. The Genius bar is my next stop, unless someone out there has advice for me.

Thanks!

This advice doesn't quite work for me. When trying to send an email, I still get the message "Cannot Send Mail. The recipient [my name] was rejected by the server." What seems to work is when I set the Authentication to "Password" rather than "MDS Challenge-Response." I can then send off one email successfully, and not another. When I go back to settings, Authentication has defaulted back to "MDS Challenge-Response." Why is this setting unable to remain at "Password"?

According to the Earthlink email setup for Mac OS 10.4.x the pop security setting should be off, but the smtpauth security on. Have you tried fiddling with those two options?

and try taking off the challenge-response setting to password...
