802.1x and the iPhone

I can vouch for whatever is happenning everywhere else is happenning also in Canada. All major universities use OSX and TTLS-PAP network too. Apple really needs to come out with an update before the ipod touch becomes available they will face many angry customers.
Apple Please follow up as we are suffering without being to use the iphone as it was actualy meant to be used.

I guess there aren't any starving college students anymore.

I'm guessing that Duke doesn't use 802.1x?

I can see why Apple might not make this a priority based upon demand from corporate networks (not wanting to compete in the enterprise market) but from an educational standpoint this is a huge misstep. I've got friends at several universities in my city and I can't get onto ANY of their networks or the network at my home university because of this. My macbook pro works fine thanks to Internet Connect but the iphone is sol.

Everyone that sees my iphone wants me to demo it for them. What I get to show them is two screens, one that says could not connect to wifi network and one that says no EDGE network available (spotty coverage on campus). Not exactly a technological tour-de-force.

I think I have to return my ipod touch because it would probably not work either.

I share this problem.
Which will happen first:
* Apple will hear the demand and add 802.1x to the iPhone
* Businesses and universities will hear the demand and add iPhone-compatible logins
???

Maybe we'll get 802.1x support with the update that will bring the iTunes WiFi store, but I'm not holding my breath...

It's pretty likely that we would get 802.1X when we get the Starbucks update. Most Starbucks Cafes have T-Mobile Hotspots, and T-Mobile Hotspots use 802.1X authentication to authenticate users....

Unless all of a sudden T-Mo opens it's hotspots for to everyone using an iPhone and allowing connections to the ITMS only.

Hi, I am a student at the University of Adelaide in Australia. I just got an iPod touch and I am annoyed that I can't access the wireless network because there is no way to put in a username and password. I've sent a request to apple feedback and I suggest anyone else who has this problem should do the same.

It sounds like this is an extremely common network standard and im shocked that there is no support for it in the ipod or iphone. Especially considering half the market for the iPod touch is made up of university students!!

I am a student as well, and I have no idea why Apple didn't include 802.1x support originally on the touch/iphone, but it is very annoying when I am sitting next to a wireless router on campus and I can't use it because of a poor software decision.

*Everybody who is having a problem with this, PLEASE send feedback to Apple to make sure that we get a software update!* I just bought an iPod touch and just discovered this problem with logging onto my university wireless network. I refuse to let Apple get away without updating the software here!

If they get enough feedback, I believe something will be done to address the problem!!!

I completely agree, as a physician working in a hospital that uses 802.1x authentication it is very frustrating not being able to connect to the network. I have left numerous requests for this update starting back in July and am very much hoping this is addressed quickly.
