iPhone causes Windows XP to crash when connected

Connecting the usb adapter from the PC to the iPhone causes a blue screen of death (BSOD).

Originally, I connected the iPhone to my Dell XPS m1210 and iTunes 7.3 to activate. Activation was seamless. It immediately recognized the iPhone and didn't cause any problems.

After activation, I disconnected the iPhone. When I reconnected it (literally plugged in the cable), my Dell started to recognize the device. Then it went directly to a BSOD. The BSOD doesn't contain the name of any file. Microsoft error reporting says the file is corrupted, so it can't analyze the problem. The problem happens again and again.

Since then, I have restarted my computer a few times, reinstalled iTunes twice, updated my usb drivers, all without any success.

Has anyone else experienced the problem? Anyone have any ideas on how to fix it?

Quick additions:
- I did a system restore back to that fateful day when I upgraded to iTunes 7.3. I was rewarded with my computer not immediately crashing. Instead in attempted to install "iPhone" but ended up with a failed to install hardware message. Then nothing happened for a few minutes. iTunes didn't recognize the device, but it didn't crash. Then it popped up the message, Found "iPhone" then "Found Digital Still Camera" (which was when the bsod happened before) and then the familiar BSOD popped up.

The BSOD reports:

Stop: 0x0000007E (and stuff here)

I am having the same problem with my iPhone. I contacted Dell and they looked at my computer and went through several things and said it is definately on the iPhone end. I called apple support and they had never heard of the problem and told me to try to sync to another computer. I tried syncing to a toshiba laptop and it worked fine. Apple then proceeded to tell me it was Dell's problem and not theirs. Dell told me it was probably something clashing with the iPhones chipset and their computer. That would have to be resolved on apples end. This is a classic case of its NOT MY PROBLEM ITS THE OTHER GUYS PROBLEM.

Let's try getting a minidump to the Apple Engineers for a look.

To set up your machine to capture a minidump, right click on "My Computer", select "Properties", select the "Advanced" tab, select the "Startup and Recovery" Settings button, select "small memory dump" from the popup. When it crashes, look for the MiniDump file. It's usually in the folder "C:\WINDOWS\Minidump" and is called something like Mini<number>-<number>.dmp.

Generate the crash, collect the minidump, and send it as an attachment to this email address

in the email to Roy, be sure to include the following information:

- A link to the thread on Apple Discussions where the issue is being discussed
- The username you are using in the thread
- The version of iTunes you are using or trying to use
- the version of Windows you are using (mention service packs)
- A concise description of the issue you are seeing
- The exact text of the error message you are seeing

Thank you very much for your help, I managed to solve the problem with an extremely inelegant solution. Unfortunately I can't send you the mini dump file as a result. Perhaps someone else with the problem can send it to you.

My inelegant solution... I reinstalled windows. That did the trick. It's working beautifully now.

I had the same issue...spent 2 days and finally resolved the problem. Apple Tech support could only offer "Reinstall Windows"...which I reluctantly did. This did not solve the problem either.

I finally resolved the problem, it was the same Logitech driver. My OS includes the driver so when I reinstalled it just put the driver right back. (Acer Travelmate 8200) My system has the built-in camera.

I finally uninstalled the camera and disabled the driver, and now iPhone is working.

The problem I have now is when I plug in the iphone I get the Windows Scanner and Camera wizard which allows me to edit the iPhone camera images.The iPhone will not open Itunes, I have to launch it manually. It syncs with itunes, I just have to lauch it manually.

How can I stop the iphone from launching the camera wizard, and how can I get it to launch itunes?

You're not the only person with this problem. I have a Dell Dimension running Windows XP Professional and have the exact same BSOD problem.

It looks like the iPhone drivers are corrupted. I've done a quick scan of the apple site but haven't found a download site to re-install the drivers.

I was hoping to give that a try before reinstalling windows.

I'm also having the same problem. If my iPhone has any pictures taken with the camera, my desktop BSODs almost immediately after connecting, usually right after flashing "camera detected". Unfortunately, my computer resets less than 200msec after this and I can't read the BSOD message.

I tried re-installing USB drivers, un-install/re-install of ITunes, and plugging the IPhone in to every other USB port on the computer. All get the crash.

I also have a Logitech QuickCam installed with a recent driver. I'll try updating and then deleting that to see if it helps.

"Re-installing Windows" is not an acceptable answer to this. I hope someone from Apple gets on this thread ASAP.

I thought my Logitech QuickCam driver was up to date, but it said May2005 in the
MyComputer->Properties->Hardware->DeviceManager->...
ImagingDevices->QuickCam->Properties->Driver tab.

Hitting "Update Driver..." actually found a newer driver (5/11/2007 in my case) and after installing and rebooting, I can now plug it in, discover the Apple iPhone camera and get pictures from it.

You can add me to the list of people for whom the Logitech driver was causing a conflict with iPhone and Windows XP. I haven't yet installed a newer Logitech drivers, but uninstalling the drivers dated from 2005 cleared up my problem.

With XP SP2, I hadn't been getting a BSOD, but if there were pictures in iPhone's camera roll when I docked it, my PC simply rebooted itself. I'd worked out that deleting the pictures made docking and synch with iTunes possible, but emailing photos to myself and deleting them is a tedious solution.

Thanks for the posts here about the Logitech conflict- It's proved to be good advice.
