H.264 video wont play on iphone

I went to the Apple store this weekend to check out the phone. I went to some video on the internet that I knew was H.264 encoded (for instance the movie at http://www.soothingenvironments.com/pacificrhythmsvideo.html) but it would not play on the phone. It seems to be within spec (h.264 and below 1.5 mb/s). Does anyone know why this wouldnt play or if there is additional specific requirements for video for the phone?

Yeah I've had a few video podcasts from itunes and even some videos from apple.com not play. I think it has something to do with the scale of the video that has to be with in spec, so does the audio encoding.

Here is the video spec list from apple.com:

Video
Video formats supported: H.264 video, up to 1.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Low-Complexity version of the H.264 Baseline Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; H.264 video, up to 768 Kbps, 320 by 240 pixels, 30 frames per second, Baseline Profile up to Level 1.3 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; MPEG-4 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats

If it's video you really want to play, you can try converting it within itunes on the mac/pc - right-click on the file in itunes and select "convert to ipod" (or something similar, this is from memory).

I have videos I've extracted from DVDs, videos I've made with iMovie, videos off my digital still camera, and all play fine though some need this conversion first (e.g. the .avi video from off my digital camera - it plays in my Mac's iphoto library but needs to be imported into iTunes and converted before it will download to, and play, on the phone)

Hey scott M,

These articles should have some good information for you.

Video files that can be played on the iPod can be played on the iPhone.

I was able to play the video you linked on my iPhone, after converting it in iTunes. First import the video to iTunes then click Advanced>Convert Selection for iPod. Then sync the newly converted selection to your iPhone.

Thanks for the replies. I imported the video to itunes and then let itunes reformat it. Strangely its a few mb bigger in size now.
If anyone wants to see if it plays from safari on the iphone now I'd love to know.
It's posted at http://www.soothingenvironments.com/iphone.html.
I'd ultimately like to figure out how to import it straight from Final Cut to the properly formatted ipod/iphone compatible file instead of processing it twice.

thanks,

Scott
