System32 and Quicktime.cpl error message

If I try to run Quicktime from control panel I get the error

An exception occurred trying to run C:\\Windows\system32\shell32.dll,Control_RUNDLL "C:\WINDOWS\System32\Quicktime.cpl", Quicktime

When I try to start off desktop, my harddrive just grinds a little, but Quicktime never starts up. Nor Picture viewer. Only thing that works is 'read me'. Running latest QT with XP, IE7, Nvidia Geforce, Dell 8200. I can view movie trailers and demo on Quicktime.com no problem.

Dell 8200, Windows XP, IE7. NVIDIA GEFORCE CARD.

Good catch! Given your other symptoms, this was one of the preliminary things i was going to have to ask you about.

It's looking for the QuickTime Control Panel in the wrong place. On a standard QuickTime 7.x.x install the QuickTime.cpl lives in \Program files\QuickTime not \Windows\System32\

What you're getting here is consistent with a different program having installed "QuickTime" componentry on the PC. Have you ever installed an ACE or K-Lite Mega Codec Pack, a copy of Storm Codec or a copy of QT Alternative on that PC? if so, which version?

i've got the same message when i try to go to the MIME settings in the browser tab. When i copy the file quicktime.cpl from C:\Program Files\QuickTime\QTSystem to C:\Windows\System32 i dont get the error. But when i try update my quicktime software i will get the error again.

I found this problem because i want to play a hd trailer on a website in firefox. But when i try it ask for plugins that i must install. When i click on that it cant be automatic installed, so i must to it manual. When im redirected to the apple page for manualy installing quicktime, i try to install it, but it seems that firefox dont see that quicktime is installed. I still get the message about plugins.

Maybe it has a conflict with the error about quicktime.cpl

btw, when i get the quicktime.cpl error, the quicktime windows close by itself.

The only other application I have that I know specifically uses quicktime is my KODAK EasyShare, because my camera takes video in .mov format only. I have no idea if anything else I have installed references the codecs you listed, my other media software is Nero and Roxio Easy Media. I tried updating Easyshare to no avail, finally moved back to original software from 3 years ago, but it also won't view movies now.
