Telephone extension numbers in Contacts

Here's a big problem I just discovered today:

If a contact has an extension on their phone contact record iPhone does not parse out the extension when dialing the number. Hence the call doesn't go through, and because iPhone can't copy and paste I'm forced to write the number down and dial it manually. This is a big problem as many of my contacts have extensions and I don't want to delete those in order to make calls.

My Blackberry had a nifty feature of recognizing an extension number and then prompting me to dial the extension after the call was connected. It would be great to see this feature added to iPhone.

I agree and would like to see extensions handled better with the iPhone. I would actually like to have the ability to insert one of a number of special characters at the end of the standard phone number to assist with the dialing of the extension.

For example: One character could designate a specific amount of time before the phone dials the extension number (maybe different characters for designating different periods of time - there might be some standard time frames defined somewhere) and another character that might just wait until the user tells the phone to dial the extension.

Phone numbers with extension aren't formatted very well, either (the numbers just all run together with no formatting).
