callers say there is an "echo"

i'm experiencing the same thing when I'm using the headphones with the integrated mic. I"m going to go by the store today and swap out the headphones to see if that helps. If you search iphone sidetone on the google you will find that a lot of people say that users of the iphone hear an echo of their own voice but I saw nothing about callers on the other end of the conversation.

When I first started using it, those I talked to say they could hear an ecco and that's when I was using the iPhone without the headset, but with the headset the ecco on their end was gone and I could hear an ecco on my end. I switched out the headset three times already and the same thing keeps occuring. I think it's a developement or possibly even a software problem to be honest.

Well I'm not sure if it's an iPhone thing, but perhaps more likely it's a wireless cell phone thing. Virtually any carrier out there with any cell phone will, from time-to-time, get a bad cell connection and create a severe echo for the outgoing caller (usually only one sided). To fix the situation merely requires hanging up and restablishing the call (forcing a new cell connection).

If your response is similar to this, after disconnecting a line and then re-establishing the call, then chalk it up to today's wireless cell technology.

You are not alone with the caller getting echo. I even troubleshot my iphone by calling it from a land line answering the iphone and speaking into the landline there was the echo on the landline.

I called ATT today to see if was a signal problem the gave me a case# and within a few hours I got a call from Apple on my iphone. The person I talked to at Apple heard the echo right away. This person was super duper helpful. They tried to make a genius appt at my local Apple store but they were booked solid. So I'm going to get a replacement iphone and send my current one back. I should get it Friday or Monday.

If the echo is on the new one it may be a problem on the ATT side

BTW, I doubt your initial post was deleted, this forum is moving/refreshing so fast, it probably just got burried to the backs of the vault quicker than you imagined. In twelve hours mine dropped back to page 36 of the forums.

I had the problem and went to the apple store and we tried new head phones and the problem is gone. It would only happen when the volume was over half way up or more. the new head phones stopped the problem and I do not get echo at full volume at all.

I haven't had a chance to go by the store yet but I just tried two outgoing calls to two different cell #'s and there was no echo on either end of the call with and without the headphones.

Might have been a quick AT&T adjustment on the network?

Wondering wheather this is just my phone evryone I
call states they hear themselves in the background.
There is a bda echo effect going on . They say it is

Hey, I've had people that I'm talking to complain of an echo... I seemed to have been able to fix it by making sure that the palm of my hand wasn't covering up the bottom of the phone. I was holding it with the bottom resting in my palm...but now, if I make sure that my hand isn't too close the bottom, I seem to have no complaints...

My girlfriend was complaining about the same thing. Turned down the volume and it went away and when I use a bluetooth headset works well too. Something else for Apple to work on (after cut and paste)

I know 5 different people with iPhones including myself, and I have confirmed 3 things to be true with all of the phones:

1) Covering the bottom right grille while talking on the phone produces an echo for the person you are speaking to. Annoying since for some reason my pinky seems to naturally end up there when holding the phone to my ear.

2) The speaker phone volume doesn't go as loud as the other forms of audio the phone produces. I believe this is related to #3.

3) If you use the speaker phone, the person you are talking to will always hear an echo. The echo gets worse the louder you make the speaker volume on your end. This is problematic because the volume is barely loud enough wide open, and if there is any noise in the room it's unusable.

My guess is the proximity of the speaker to the mic is causing this issue, so don't count on a software fix. It's also probably the reason the speaker phone cannot go as loud as the iPod. If you cranked up the speaker any louder, the echo problem would render the speaker useless.

Want to try an experiment? If you have an external iSight camera and use the camera's built-in microphone, try putting it right next to your computer speakers. Now wait and see how the person on the other end of your iChat sessson reacts. Chances are they will be cursing you before you have a chance to inquire about the audio quality.

yeah i just tested it out again. its definitely an iphone thing. The headphones make it much worse though so stick with just using the phone itself.

It was deleted Greg they sent me a email saying that they deleted it. I made some comments on the design that were not negative just an observation.

When my wife uses her ear phones it get the echo really bad. She unplugged them and all was good.
