Command to list audio devices?

Is there a UNIX or AppleScript command that can get a list of available audio devices?

Esp. UNIX would be helpful. From SuperCollider <http://supercollider.sourceforge.net/> I can open a Pipe, run the command and read the output, then make a decision about what audio device to use based on what's actually there.

It gives you a list of all the extensions/devices on your computer -- "sdev" is what you're looking for. But I think it doesn't go beyond the device (like, it'll list your built-in audio and your firewire device(s), but not the individual channels).

But maybe it's a jumping-off point?

Try the PortAudio <www.portaudio.com> library, specifically the test executable pa_devs. Running it, you get a lot of information including lines like:

Name = Built-in Audio

which you could extract with whatever regex filter you want. If you know any C, you could easily modify the pa_devs program to give exactly the format you want.
