AVCHD compatibility

AVCHD compatibility

I am hoping to cature video into iMovie 6 from a Sony HDR-UX5 HD video camcorder which uses AVCHD format. It looks like iMovie is not compatible. Does anyone know how to make it work?

I believe AVCHD support has just been added to Final Cut Pro. What’s New in this Version - Final Cut Pro 6.0.1 contains several updates, including: - Support for the AVCHD format through the Log and Transfer interface

It's anybodies guess when, if ever, such support will come to the iApps.

Doesn't the camera also support an SD mode?

Yes it does support SD mode but of course I wanted to shoot in HD mode. It's a friends camera and I shot 2 hours of vacation video I'd like to work with.

It sounds like the format is a consumer format so shouldn't it be included in the next iMovie version?

Sony often goes off and does things on their own with no thought about Mac compatability.

I just came across a site selling software called Voltaic for converting AVCHD format to a "Mac-friendly format".
