What is "Other" Memory?

When I sync my iPhone with iTunes, I have over 2 GB being used by "Other" (does not include the 1 gig of audio, half gig of video, and 1 gig of photos)

I'd be really dissapointed if this 2 GB of "Other" space was my contacts / bookmarks / etc., because I've really only put in about 20 or so contacts. Maybe I'm missing something - is there a way to store this general phone info to the SIM card?

Any ideas on what this memory could be and how I can reduce it?

Do a restore and add your stuff one at a time. First your contacts, then your Mail or whatever else you use until you see the spike shows up in the data field in iTunes. Knowing what caused the jump in the storage is the first step. May be the combination of the things you added really take that much space. The iPhone SIM card does not have memory that is accessable by the user.

Unless you changed the email settings it saves all your deleted emails forever. It also saves all your sent emails as well as all your sms messages. Saved Notes, alarms and Calendar alarms also take up a little space in Other.

Voicemails and deleted VM's are also taking up your Other space. Deleted VM's hang around a week or so.

I am not positive but maybe pictures in your camera roll, not your synced photos, also take up space from Other.

If you hacked and added ringtones or any programs, that would probably fall into Other.

I had this problem previously and after much digging into it, I found that the "other" catagory builds up over time because of google maps and satelite images being cached. The only way I found to clear this out was to do a reset from the iphone settings/general page with "erase all content". Then to recover lost data, do a restore when connected to ITunes, then resync.
Its a pain but I went from 60 mb down to 12.5 mb after this process.
I would love to know if there is a eaiser way to clear the maps cache.

This really sounds awkward.

Maybe you didn't put everything back based on an 80% reduction in the memory usage in the 'other' category.

You must do a lot of browsing, etc., to have built up that much cache...

Regardless, this is something that needs to be pointed out to Apple in their feedback area to bring this to their attention if this is the only way to reduce the use the 'other' memory.
