Kyocera KR1 EVDO router and iPhone - 3G on the iPhone!

Like others, I have noted that the iPhone will send calls to voice mail if you are actively browsing using EDGE. So, I got out my Kyocera KR1 EVDO-WiFi router, which I use with a Novatel S620 EVDO card on Sprint. This router comes with a 12VDC plug so I can use it mobile.

It works great, after I power up the KR1, the iPhone quickly finds the WiFi signal from the KR1. I can use the internet through the router on WiFi and still be able to take calls. Plus I get more speed from 3G that I do from EDGE of course.

Next I will be upgrading my S620 to a U720, to get EVDO Rev.A, and the iPhone will really fly with WiFi through the KR1 (since I'm in Sprint's area). Will definitely be keeping my Sprint data service for this purpose.

lots of macs here, Mac OS X (10.4.10), 8gb iPhone

I should note that on the iPhone, these are the speeds I am seeing:

WiFi through EVDO router, at fringe of Sprint area: about 620-680 kbit/sec down (NON-RevA EVDO, should be faster with RevA)

EDGE, about 1 mile from an AT&T tower: about 178 kbit/sec down

Speakeasy T1 at home, WiFi through Apple Airport Extreme: about 850-1050 kb/sec (depending on what else I'm doing at the moment on the T1)

This is using the mobile speed test at http://www.dslreports.com/mspeed
