Hyperlinks don't activate in the PDF file

Hello all:

I'm working with Pages (v. 1.0.2) and cannot get the text hyperlinks (going to URLs) to work. They work in the Pages app. But when I Print > PDF > Compress PDF, the created file has blue underlined text all right, but when I hover over these links, the cursor doesn't change to a hand that activates the hyperlink(s). Incidentally, although text hyperlinks aren't active on these PDFs, one email hyperlink I've set up on that same PDF DOES work. Go figure!

What might I do to activate every text hyperlink? (If valuable, is there a way to attach the PDF on this Apple Discussion forum for testing purposes?)

T, ia.

The numbers with % marks get inserted when you use non-"web-safe" characters in your hyperlink. Web addresses are generally best if they only have letters, numbers, forward slashes, and simple punctuation (e.g., - or _). If a URL has a space in it, that is generally converted to %20 (this is known as "escaping"). A single quote would be converted to %27. An actual percent sign would be shown as %25 in a URL. (You can see the codes by looking in the hex column of the table at http://www.asciitable.com/ ).

I think what is happening in your case is that you are beginning with a legitimate with URL with %20 and %27 codes in it. But then somewhere in the process it gets "escaped" again, and the % marks each get converted to %25. Sounds like a bug somewhere between Pages and the PDF writer -- the text is getting escaped twice, and the second time shouldn't happen. You might want to report this to Apple as a bug.

In the mean time, you can make prettier and more reliable URLs by avoiding those weird characters entirely. For example, you could stick in underscores (_) instead of the spaces and single quotes in your original filename, and then it will sail through with no trouble.

Thanks, Bekins.

Before I upgrade, I'd like to ask if you [or anyone else] using Pages 2 has had difficulty activating text hyperlinks.

Also wondering if Apple is likely to provide a Pages v.3 when Leopard launches this fall. Anyone know?

And if Pages v.3 might arrive this fall, do you imagine it will have the ability for users to place drop caps within the documents?

You can manually place drop caps now. Change one of the characters that you want drop capped to exactly what you want then create a new character style from that. Go through your document highlighting where you want the drop cap and click the style of the drop cap you created. It's quick. It's easy for a drop cap font. But when wrapping and such, that requires additional steps.

Then what you need to do is treat the giant drop cap as an image of sorts. Then wrap. I'm not so up on the exact how of it because I only experimented with it once for one of my documents, didn't really want that effect then went on to do something else. But it IS doable. Some of the other folks have written about it here before. Search "Drop Caps" and wrapping topics. WORD is WORD. Pages is Pages. The problem with drop caps I've had the most frustrating problem with is the fonts with ascenders and descenders (lower case d's and l's and p's and q's) They push the lines apart and such. I like using an app like Baytex Font Show (a freebie I found) to audition fonts to see which have a common base line. Otherwise, I'll create a letter image to use in AppleWorks or Photoshop or something. There is always a workaround with Drop Caps. Just gotta do the working around to get where you want to go with it.

Peace 🙂

I have Pages 2.0.2 and I am having the same difficulty with hyperlinks. Does anyone have any hints on how to get them to work when exported to PDF? They aren't working in Preview or Adobe Acrobat.

Thanks!

Righto. Thanks. I've asked a friend with both to export the file to PDF for me and when it's exported, the hyperlinks work....except to my .mac pages where it adds an extra couple of digits to the URL. Here's a snippet of what it's adding "Boones%2527%2520News" It should just read "Boones%27%20News"

Any ideas???

TIA!

Sorry I wasn't more precise:
You need both Pages 2 and MacOS 10.4 for hyperlinks
in PDFs.

This may be a solution. UNIX may be placing the extra numbers in when it sees a space between letters. Try redoing your iWeb site, making certain your have no spaces between the words (where your extra numbers are being placed) I've had the same issue and this may be the reason and solution.

( The %20 may be an indication that you have a space)

Try it and let us know if this worked for you. Thanks
