Vague question: Buying a used iMac

Hi Folks,

On Thursday I'm going to buy another (the 3rd) older iMac. It will have a 500 MHz processor and 512 MB of RAM, and about 50 GB of space. It's sorta a royal blue/purple semi-translucent casing, and it has Firewire. I'm also going to upgrade to Tiger, if that's a good idea (is it???).

Okay, does anyone know which iMac it is? I get really confused with the ones around the "turn of the century". I'm wondering, among other things, if it's a G4. The store's closed until Thursday and I'm just biding my time. I'd like to do some investigating, though.

Any help would be much appreciated; say a link to the iMacs somewhere on the Apple site and elsewhere.

Thank you,

Allan (the questioner, not the answerer)

PS By the way, the place I mentioned is where I volunteer. They recycle old computers and dispose of the monitors in a enviro-friendly way. I get half-off, so I'll be paying $50 for the unit (and I'm probably going to splurge for a $10 CD-RW drive). Sorry to turn this into a blog! Happy 4th. I'm celebrating by looking at the special patriotic icon on the Google site. Wooo!

iMac G3 350 MHz 256 MB 20 GB Hard Drive, Mac OS X (10.3.9), Using Safari 1.3 (v.312) Oh, and I always try to mark "solved" & '"helpful"

Hello Again Allan!

The first iMac G4 was the iMac (Flat Panel), iMac (17-inch Flat Panel). So I don't think it is a G4

The model you are purchasing, must be one of those listed below that one, on this page iMac Specifications.

The specs you posted, I assume are not the original equipment.

Also, if it doesn't have an original CD-RW, it may be, a configuration of this one iMac (Summer 2000) - Technical Specifications.

The 800 MHz came in the Flat Panel, realeased in 2002 with 40 and 60 GB HDDs, which seems a likely one.
It also came in the Flat Panel 17", also released in 2002 which came with a 80 GB HDD.
It also came in the 15" released in early 2003, which came with a 60 GB 7200 rpms HDD. They all support firewire and USB.

Any one of these will easily run Tiger.

Please post back with further questions/comments, or when you get your hands on it, with an update.

Good luck.
