International Roaming

I travel often and want to take my iPhone with me to listen to the iPod feature. I was recently in Brazil and when I turned my phone on it downloaded my e-mail and visual voice mail automatically. I was not in airplane mode. Will I get charged International Roaming for the data download?

I understand making a call is expensive but what about the data? Do I need to leave it in airplane mode to avoid extra charges?

Called ATT Tech Support and Apple Tech support. Got two different replies. ATT & Apple says that if you are out of country (ooc) you won't be charged for EDGE or WiFi...it just hooks up to the Internet and you are fine. But...if you receive a call or call out...you are roaming and you'll be charged according to your plan. The ATT site shows a $24.95 plan but its for regular users. Neither support site had knew what the real answer is. So....I'm keeping my Tmobile account active until I try it and see what I'm charged.

Ridgebacks --

My SO and I have been AT&T/Cingular wireless customers for years. We travel out of country; destinations are generally Mexico, Canada and frequently China. We have experience with AT&T international roaming and Edge data international roaming plans. (We have an AT&T wireless card with data plan for our laptops for emergencies.)

SO has a Blackberry, which he relied on completely during a recent trip in China, when he spilled a Coke on his laptop inflight. The BB bundled data plan is more expensive than the iPhone plan, but it incorporates receipt of messages almost anywhere in the world. However, SO seldom uses his BB as a phone in China/Hong Kong, because AT&T roaming charges (phone) are high. He has a dedicated cell phone with a Hong Kong #.

As well, the wireless card is used out of country only in emergencies. Edge roaming rates do apply and are incredibly high, even in Mexico.

I doubt that AT&T will deviate very much from their historic billing policies for the iPhone. I have seen on some message boards that AT&T is offering an international data plan for use with the iPhone, but that one must purchase it for at least a year. There is no "purchase as needed monthly" option. I don't know what the rate is for that plan.

My suggestion, if you don't want to use airplane mode, is to turn your email accounts "off" under settings. That way, phone is functional, but the network won't download email. That's what I'll probably do next time I'm ooc.

I have spoken to cingular(AT&T ) personnel on this one.

I enquired about the charges for INDIA and EUROPE.

following is their reply. (please confirm with AT & T before you goahead and take a decission)

1)there is a charge of 3.99 per month on international roaming. this allows an access to AT&T service(with the local providers help) and there will be a 32 cents per minute charge in addtion to monthly charge.

2) They do not have international data plan for Iphone yet.
but it might be 2 cents per KB .

they have different charges for a land line and mobile phone. for Europe and INDIA. Details are available now at AT&T

I call China alot. ATT has a international calling plan that is 3.99 per month for calls from USA to international. Then there is a 2nd add on that allows calls from a international location to the USA. The plan for calling from USA to international usually has a waiting delay, but with the new activated members with iPHones, the waiting can be waved so it takes effect now. I called and they did this for me anyway.

I just set up international roaming, so I can tell you definitively:

1) There are a number of diffent international roaming plans which can be found here:
http://www.wireless.att.com/learn/international/roaming/affordable-world-package s.jsp
2)You don't have to subsribe to any of these. These plans give you discounted per minute charges if you pay a flat monthly fee between $3.99 and $5.99, depending on the plan. But if you want you can just activate international roaming without subscribing to a plan. They call this Standard International Roaming and you can call 1-800-331-0500 to activate it.
3) The per minute charges and data/SMS charges vary by the country you are calling from. You can find the table here:
http://www.wireless.att.com/learn/international/roaming/international-roaming.js p
For example, in Finland, phone calls are $1.29 per minute using ATT Standard International Roaming or $0.99 per minute if you subsribe to the $5.99 per month ATT World Traverler plan. The charge is $0.50 per text message and $0.02 per KB of data, regardless of which plan you subscribe to.

Ok thanks everybody. I will either deactivate the e-mail account (but this might not fix the visual voice mail download or text message download) or more than likely set it to airplane mode. This takes care of all data.

I have a phone I use for local calls that is prepaid. So I have that covered too. Even if the iPhone was able to swap a Sim card or was cheap for local roaming calls, I would be afraid to use it for fear of getting it stolen in Brazil.

Thanks all.
