nano not charging in car

I have a new nano. It charges from the computer no problems. I have bought two car chargers and used various cars and leads but when I plug it into he cigarette lighter it shows it is charging but after about one minute goes to sleep and stops charging or turns off. Spoke to apple they gave me a brand new ipod nano which does exactly the same. Is there a trick t charging from a cigarett lighter??????
