I've figured out all the charges if I use my phone wil on a trip to Canada. However I would like to be able to use my calendar and contacts from my iphone whil over there.

Can someone confirm that if I leave my phone on "airplane mode" while in Canada, I'll see no extra charges on my bill?

Note that using your iPhone in Canada can be about the same cost as using your phone in the states.

Add the Canadian call/roaming package to your service (you an cancel it when you return). You'll see a couple dollar difference on your bill.

Here in Detroit almost all of us have added the Canadian package because you can't tell when you are connecting to a Detroit tower in downtown, and when you are connecting to a Windsor Ontario tower while downtown. I go to Toronto all the time and use my ATT over there and have never seen more than a few dollar difference on a bill with the canadian package added.

I was looking at my phone bill from last month (AT&T) and the 2 calls I made to Toronto (I live on the US West Coast) didn't have a charge to them. They were part of my minutes.

Is that correct? Not that I'm going to file a complaint or anything.

So, if what the above guy says is true, if I sign up for Canada package, will I get charged for calls, or will the calls be applied against my minutes/data package?

You have to make sure that if you do anything with data on your iPhone that you are connected to wifi. If not and an edge network is available, you will use it. Also, remember, visual voice mail is considered data. If you want to be safe, you can ask AT&T to mark you account for no data use (and text messages). I think this will carry over to roaming networks, but you might want to ask them about it.

Here's what I've been told by AT&T:

The rep said:

- You don't need to activate any sort of International Roaming on your AT&T account to use the iPhone in Canada. It will just work.
- You will be charged standard roaming fees while making and receiving calls.
- Like RonAnnArbor said, there is a plan to make lots of calls cheaper while roaming in Canada, and calling Canada from the states.
- You will be charged $0.0195 cents per KB of data sent and received while roaming in Canada. I assume this applies to Visual Voicemail, as well as e-mail and web stuff.
