One observation: if I have the NYTimes site up and then click home, and come back a while later, the page has not been automatically updated. Since the site automatically updates on a regular browser with some frequency, my guess is that even if the website has code that calls for updating itself, it's not happening when safari is not the frontmost app. But that's just an observation!

It appears that, just as with some other phone OS's, apps continue to exist in the background. This makes them faster to appear the next time you choose them.

That does not necessarily mean they use up cpu (or battery), of course. An idle display is pretty much just that.

What is not known is how much memory they use, and if perhaps Apple is holding back on more apps until they decide how to handle the situation where some must be stopped in order to start the new one you want.
