From what I understand, a two year contract is absolutley required. Not sure about the activation fee, I was already with AT&T and if they try to charge me with a fee I will most assuredly get it removed! I was not under contract when I got the iPhone but did agree to the 2 years because I have been with AT&T for many years and have no reason to change.. but I WILL NOT pay for activation... and in my opinion, no one should.

To find the AT&T Wireless iPhone Forums, click here:

http://forums.wireless.att.com/cng/board?board.id=apple

If that link does not take you to the iPhone Forums, try this:

1) Find the iPhone page on ATT's wireless webpage.

2) Click on 'Get iPhone Support'

3) Under Customer Forums, Click on 'Go to Forums'

It should take you there 😉

I guess you could be correct on that, my apologies. That would only be because you have already laid out $500 - $600 without being able to go through the activation process until you get home. Since you laid out the money I'm sure that Apple made a stipulation w/ AT&T that said something like, "If someone buys our iPhone and doesn't pass your credit check, we still want them to be able to use it".. then AT&T would have to agree because they are banking on getting a lot of new subscribers from this. But can you even imagine the amount of money those less-than-creditworthy folks would have to pay for the data and airtime? Again, people with bad credit shouldn't be trying to get an iPhone... just my opinion... trying not to judge anyone!

There have been many ways to get around the useage of AT&T to be able to use most of the features on iPhone, such as the iPod and Wi-Fi. Going Pre-Paid and then canceling is one way, there is also another way when you switch out SIM cards and put an inactive one (i think) in the iPhone. You get an error but I still believe you can use those features.
