I have a brand new Dell Lap top and when I try to burn cds it gives me the unknown (2131) error. I have used my burner with other programs so I know that is not it and I have also tried re-installing itunes but that did not work as well. Any one else have this problem? Any suggestions?
That's actually the first time I've seen it on a Dell (although i haven't been doing much working on Importing & Burning issues for a few weeks now). I'd mostly seen it reported on one particular variety of drive on Toshiba models.
Can you post your DVD/CD diagnostics for us please?
Put a music CD in each of your drives. Then, in iTunes, go "Help > run diagnostics ...", select "DVD/CD diagnostics, and paste the complete results into a reply.

Okay, there's no newer firmware being offered by Dell for that drive, for either 32-bit or 64-bit versions of Vista.
Do you have a 32-bit or a 64-bit version of Vista? (Dell splits out their driver downloads pages for the Inspiron 1501 depending on which one bit-version you have.)
... head up to the "Operating System:" area at the top of the page, click "Change OS", and select "Vista 32-bit".
When you get through to the Vista 32-bit page, there's a few different potentially burning-relevant updates we should check on.
Check to see if your
Dell Inspiron 1501 System BIOS is up to date.
Check to see if the Video Adapter - Driver for your
ATI IGP Xpress 1150 is up to date.
(If there's anything else there relevant to your particular Inspiron 1501 configuration that you're behind on, now would probably be a good time to pick up those updates too.)
Once you're satisfied that you're up to date, do you still get the 2131?
I have the Dell 1501 and have the same exact error and problem. I used the OS explore utility and when I listed the files in the itunes directory, there was a prompt at the top of the screen to burn a CD. I was able to burn one, but they were in the MP4 format not in an audio CD format to use in a CD player. If anyone finds an answer please let us know.
i am having the same problem with my new inspiron 1501 with vista and i want to try and fix the problem but i dont understand what i am supposed to do by going to the "operating system" where is that located?
I am having the same problem with my E1505...I am extremely irritated by this. What could cause this? I burn Cds almost everday for my job and now I cannot.
If no joy there, if your Security software is set to scan attached media automatically, try switching that off prior to a burn to see if that helps with the 2131.
But if no joy there, try heading to the following page to check for other documentation and to submit your DVD/CD diagnostics to Apple:
My nephew just bought a brand new Dell E1501 and we get the same error using Vista. This seems to be a major problem. I am using a Dell E1705 with XP and no issues burning here. I hope someone can find a fix for this.
