If you call and check your voice mail, like on any phone other than the iPhone, your response is correct and it is the same no matter which carrier you use.

If you are checking your VVM it is not on the server, it is on your iPhone and no connection is made with the network so how would they measure how much time you spent listening to your mail?

Please cut the AT&T people some slack and realize that the iPhone is a new thing for them too and they are using their CRM to get stock answers that apply to the 100 other phones that use the network. And of course we don't know exactly what you asked them. If it was, "Do I get charged for checking my voice mail", then the answer would be yes. If it was "Do I get charged for checking my Visual Voice Mail on my iPhone," it would be no.

Ok, this is really weird. I called back and asked if I check my visual voice mail from my iPhone during the week will I charged anytime minutes. Can't ask it any plainer than that. They said yes you are suppose to be charged anytime minutes according to their documents, but those minutes actually seem to get charged to your mobile to mobile calling which would in fact make them free. Now I would like to get a definite answer to this. I'm tired of calling. Maybe you could give it a try.

iPhone's visual voicemail is not on the server and when checked from your iPhone, NO phone call is made or required so it is impossible to be charged airtime minutes when no call is involved.

I prefer referring to documented information over speaking to what amounts to not much more than minimum wage help - unless speaking with a supervisor or management level over the front line folks that answer the phone.

I finally got this resolved from a manager. He said that when someone leaves me a voice mail I get charged anytime minutes during the week if I answer it or not. You don't get charged to listen to it. So as I understand it I am ultimately getting charged for the voice mail as soon as one leave a voice mail. So I guess voice mail is not free. If anyone wants to dispute that, give them a call please.

ok, this took some digging, but i found it. if you go to the store on apple.com and click on the iphone, under the options for selecting which phone you want (4GB or 8GB), there is a section called "at&t rate plans for iphone". click on "learn more about plans and activation" at the bottom of that little section, it opens up a new window. on the left in gray are various subjects, pick "data and SMS". the 4th question under this subject is about whether or not visual voicemail erodes your minutes. the answer is no, it goes against your unlimited data plan. at&t apparently converts your voicemails into sound files, which are sent to your phone by their data network.

now if you actually CALL your own number from your iphone to access voicemail, then yea, it uses minutes, just like any other cell phone.
