Aug 27, 2007 6:46 AM in response to ams1024by Prr0,Hi guys,
I also have this problem, someone could solve it without replacing the unit? -
Sep 2, 2007 9:42 AM in response to Patrick Symesby JayS,Macbook is not reading anything but DVD movies. I tried the suggestions you listed, but to no avail. Phoned Apple just now and she said to take it in and have it looked at. She didn't even mention the measures you took (PRAM, SMC), but I told her I tried those and it didn't change anything. Perhaps they now know that the only way to deal with this is to take it in....
I find this ridiculous. This Macbook was purchased 7 weeks ago. I stumbled onto this issue because I was trying to install a printer onto the computer for my daughter, who is leaving for university tomorrow and obviously needs to take her computer with her. We just got two Macbooks 7 weeks ago, and I must say this leaves a sour taste in my mouth. -
Sep 3, 2007 5:01 AM in response to Prr0by dadofsam,Had this problem with mine all summer aswell, pleased to see i am not the only one, and none of the suggestions here have solved it so far, surely all these issues cannot be ignored by Apple if there is so many people with defective drives?! -
Sep 3, 2007 8:28 AM in response to dadofsamby Helga,Well, after working with the lady at Applecare she decided I needed to take it to an Applestore, which I did. When they noticed it wouldn't even read the iWork install DVD they right away gave me a new optical drive. The whole thing took about an hour. All is well now.

Sep 4, 2007 1:19 AM in response to ams1024by RyanVig,i found that by pressing down just to the right of the enter and right shift keys you have a greater chance of getting the disc read. i just noticed the problem today right after i burned boot camp 1.4. it burned correctly and everything but when i tried to install the drivers on xp, it just kept spitting out. press hard down and it does work... sometimes.. lol -
Oct 24, 2007 8:50 PM in response to ams1024by mikebrittain,I'm having the same problems with my CD/DVD drive in my MacBook. The drive model is MATSHITADVD-R UJ-857, Revision HBEA. I tried resetting PRAM and SMC as reported by another poster. Didn't do anything to solve this problem.
Symptoms are that I insert a CD (music) or DVD (movie). The drive accepts the disc and attempts to read it. I hear sounds of the drive trying to spin up three times. Finally, the drive ejects the disc without mounting it.
I suspect it's time to call Apple Care. -
Oct 24, 2007 10:17 PM in response to mikebrittainby ThatVideoGuy,I'm having the same issue. I insert even a retail DVD and it spits it back at me. Anyone else ask AppleCare about this? -
Oct 26, 2007 9:53 AM in response to ThatVideoGuyby Bonnie Goldman,I only noticed the problem when I went to install Leopard. Won't play any DVDs, but music CDs are ok. Called Apple and while they went throught he usual steps, it still didn't work. Did an immediate eject of the Apple Install disks too. So, off to the Genius Bar on Monday. Don't think there is a fix to this other than the optical drive. -
Oct 26, 2007 8:18 PM in response to Bonnie Goldmanby twofeetagain,I am having the same EXACT problem with the same computer. I also purchased Leopard and noticed the problem after I tried to install Leopard and it spit it back out. Do you get charged to take it to the Applestore? I've had my macbook for 8 months.
This is terrible. I was counting down days until Leopard arrived. -
Oct 26, 2007 9:05 PM in response to twofeetagainby ThatVideoGuy,Same deal with Leopard CD. I kept inserting it over and over. Finally got it to mount, then on reboot, it wouldn't mount to install. Went through the process again, and it mounted both times. Now I have Leopard installed. But it took around 2hrs total from the time I unwrapped the disk until it finished installing. -
Oct 26, 2007 9:51 PM in response to ThatVideoGuyby Ashley Lake,I have the same computer as all of the above and today I began having the same problem when I insert CDs and DVDs- anyone know what to do? -
Oct 28, 2007 7:51 AM in response to mikebrittainby Yukihiko Wada,I read through all the messages on this discussion. I have exactly the same problem. In my case, it started from CD. DVD was kind of OK but doesn't read Leopard DVD I think Apple should recall MacBook, wouldn't you all think so? -
Oct 28, 2007 2:37 PM in response to Yukihiko Wadaby ThatVideoGuy,I put it a lens cleaner disk today.. the drive literally tore fibers off of the disk as it spun, then spat it out. I made an appt at the Genius Bar for tomorrow night. I'll post what they say. -
Oct 28, 2007 4:30 PM in response to ThatVideoGuyby cedavis,I just bought a used Macbook with a warranty/applecare and the drive has yet to work. It has spit out every disc I put in. I've contacted the company I purchased it from and was told to take it in for warranty work, so now I will again be computerless I think if everyone is having this big of trouble with the drive then apple should put out a recall.
