cannot be synced, unknown error (-48)

Okay, I installed the latest version of iTunes the other day, and since then I absolutely cannot put songs on my iPod.

When I connect my ipod to my computer, it seems to work fine - iTunes will open up like always, my songs on my iPod will show up and I can play them. However, I get this notice:

'The iPod "Sara's iPod" cannot be synced. An unknown error occured (-48).'

And it reappears every time I try and put new music on. I've tried the 5 Rs (short of restore....I wanted to see if there were other options first), reinstalled iTunes, restarted my iPod several times....

Can someone please help???

I have the same problem, but started with Error (-69); then went to error (-48). We imported songs from CD's and it copied them over, but won't play them. Some Games can't be synced anymore.
I have tried everything - even restore... at which time the Error -48) started to appear. I have thought about reformatting - another person mentioned on a topic I read. I did disk check and it came up with No IEEE 1394 host controller found.
It is still under warranty... do you think this is something they will fix? or try reformatting first (a bit worried about doing this)? Suggestions appreciated!

an update...I downgraded back to the previous version of iTunes, and now I'm getting this message:
'The iPod "Sara's iPod" cannot be synced. The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable'

I'm becoming desparate...can somebody PLEASE save the day?

Hi taur5684,

I really would suggest that you give the restoring a try. It's one of the first steps to take if you're having iPod issues, and also, it's worth a try with the "corrupt and unreadable" error, as well.

Have you tried looking through the general advice in these articles? It's not exactly your error message, but they might have a solution:

"Disk cannot be read from or written to" when syncing iPod
iTunes displays a -50 error when syncing iPod on Windows XP
As somewhat of a last resort, you can always to back to the pervious version of iTunes that you were on, or at least a relatively stable iTunes 7 version.
