REALLY WEIRD BUMP ON MAC! HELP!!!

Hey Everyone,

I just noticed that i have a very awkward bump at the bottom of my macbook. The pertruding bump is somewhat in the middle of the three screws that form a triangle in the opposite side of the battery--sort of in the middle of the, right under the keyboard. Hope i have made it clear...

HAS ANYONE SEEN ANYTHING LIKE THIS BEFORE? I would think that it was my doing if the bump was inward but its an outward bump, which i cannot explain the cause of.

Hope someone can shed some light on this, since its the third replacement macbook that i get, its getting very annoying.

The computer is working fine, and no complications, just noticed the bump.

I guess '3rd time's the charm' doesn't really apply here. I looked under my Macbook to see what your talking about ...I thought it might be a battery bulge that has been noted before - but as you say, it's not in that area. In any case, I found my book also has a slight 'warp' to the bottom in the same area you mention ...especially when I run my hand across the entire surface at one time.

It's not that noticeable for me - although I would guess it may be the result of heating as that is the place where the Macbook would get the warmest. If it gets larger to the point where the Macbook won't 'balance' or lay flat then you may have a case for bringing it in. If it's simply a small bulge or warp and is not affecting its performance or its way of 'sitting' - then I suggest living with it. If it continues to get worse then by all means, bring it in to see what an Apple Tech might have to say.

I just looked at the bottom of my MacBook and I too have a VERY slight bulge. I cant tell by touch, but when I look at the bottom from the side of my MB I can see a SMALL bump.

If the bump IS NOT affecting your MB I would leave it be and go about your business as usual. There must be a lot of hardware where the bump is. That is the only reason I can think of why there would be a bump there.

Just wondering is it a bump like a marble or is it over a larger area. Reason I ask is are the screws in to tight to cause this bulge?

A bulge over a large area. It's not causing any problems, I don't mind it.

I too noticed the bump when I first got my MacBook. It is actually addressed in Appendix B of the manual, page 106 of the Core Duo version, C2D might be in a different place:

"The bottom of the MacBook case functions as a cooling surface that transfer heat from inside the computer to the cooler air outside. The bottom of the case is raised slightly to allow airflow that keeps the unit within normal operating temperatures. In addition, warm air is vented from the slots in the back of the case."

Thanks everyone for the great replies. I actually had the logicboard replaced on this macbook because it overheated (drastically) a few months ago, so i'm assuming that the extreme heat from that problem is what did it. So that's what created the bulge.

As of now its not creating any issues and its still not large enough that it makes the macbook teeter when its sitting on a flat surface, so i guess i'll have to live with it.
