updating ipod

my ipod won't update the songs i recently added.i've re-installed, i've downloaded the newer version of i-tunes, and i've deleted at least 15 songs. but seeing how it won't update anything it doesn't realize.my itunes doesn't even recognize my ipod is plugged in when i plug it in to the computer.it charges but doesn't update.someone please help pretty pretty please. =]
