Time Codec VTR Mode ... Help I Cannot Even Start To Use My Software!
Hi guys ... someone must be able to help me here. I've FCP 5.1 I think it is for months now and still cannot log and capture. First my video camera was not compatible, so I got a digital video convertor. Now I've attached that to the convertor, its a Canopus, and now when I do log and capture it comes up with a black screen saying something about the time codec and having the video in vtr mode? Which it is? If i do exactly the same thing in iMovie, it works fine, i can save, capture and edit but not in FCP? Can someone help?
If you're using an analog to digital converter, such as those offered by Canopus, you won't have timecode from the tape passed along with the analog signal. In FCP you'll need to set Device Control to "Non-Controllable Device." iMovie doesn't use the origianl tape's timecode so it's not an issue in that program.
You'd be better off quality-wise and have the ability to recapture if you used a compatible VTR or camcorder for capturing.
Hi, thanks for the quick response, you will have to forgive my naiveity here but I think the convertor I have should be fine. It comes under FCP's compatible devices and has a button to switch between analog and digital. The camcorder I am using is a Sony HDR-HC3? So if I do as you say in your email then the time codec shouldnt be an issue?
Your convertor will be fine for capturing pictures, but if all your dirves should fail or get coffee spilt on them you will not be able to recapture them exactly as they are now, since your convertor does not give timecode from your tape. So you would have to start again completely. If that's not going to happen then its not a problem as such. I think you're confusing two issues hre as well. There is first the one of timecode which as you know is a sequencial numbering system on the tape which helps you to find spefici frames accuratley, and helps machines syncronise. But there is also the issue of the codec ( which stands for comrepession de-compression), this is how the computer deals with the pictures to make them more managable. Some codecs compress the picture quality to make a smaller file size but low quality pictures. others are near lossless and have great quality but are huge files. The Animation codec is an example of this. Codecs are as varied as there are software companies out there making them.
thanks for that. So in short how do I fix my actual problem then and what is the problem. I will run you through what is happening. I attach the camcorder via firewire to the Canopus Digital Convertor. I attach the Canopus via 6pin firewire to the mac. I turn both on and turn on FCP. I go to file, log and capture. I press capture now and it comes up with a black screen and an error about time codec and not having the camcorder in vtr mode which it actually is? So is FCP no recognising that the Canopus convertor is connected to it?
You do not need a digital converter if you are using a DV camera. Two devices like this on the chain confuses FCP since BOTH can provide DV. Use one or the other as the DV source.
You really ought to read through the getting started portion of the manual. It will help build a more fundamental understanding of how the system works.
read Davids post again
set "device control" to "non controlled device"
make sure your camera is playing whats on the tape
roll the tape and hit "capture now"
