Is a separate case for iPhone really necessary?

I got one of those Belkin cases for my iPhone based on experience I had with Belkin case for the other iPods I have. But unlike my experience with the other iPods and the Belkin cases for them, the iPhone Belkin case does not allow for placing the iPhone in the dock that came with the phone. Have to take the case off to fit it into the dock. Ugh.

Do I really need a case if I never wear the iPhone on my person and just stuff it into a pocket or bag???

Actually, just an FYI:

If I use the dock that came with the iPod Nano, the case can be left on. Problem is that not everything seems to be syncing all the time using the Nano dock. Don't you kind of wonder whether when case manufacturers designed and developed these things, whether they actually tried it out or did they just maybe stick the phone in it and stopped there! Inquiring minds wonder but don't necessarily need to know at this point... 😉

I have on order a Belkin holster - I like the idea of carrying around the iPhone in a protected way but also like the idea of using the iPhone without the case - so hopefully this will be a good solution for that.

On the charging issue - I was lucky enough to find the iPod soft freebie case that came with it (forget which generation). This fits great over the iPhone and I use it when charging just to keep dust off of it. (Actually I'm using now when getting about with the iPhone in my pocket until my Belkin comes in Monday).
