iPod battery dead

I have a 4th gen, click wheel iPod and after downloading the latest software updates--iTunes 7.3.1 and Quick Time 7.2--my battery no longer accepts a charge. Before and after downloading I went through disk permissions/repair and restart and iTunes updated my podcasts, etc without difficulty. However, when I attempted to put a charge on the unit last night nothing happened. I've reset it several times without luck. The battery was replaced just last November. Is it the battery or the update? Any suggestions would be appreciated.
