Iphone to BMW 328i via USB only

My car only has a USB connection, not Bluetooth. When I connect my iphone to it in the selection menu, when I select USB, it tells me ERROR, and won't switch to it. I let it sit for couple of minutes thinking that it needed time to read the memory, but unfortunately it is just not working. The Iphone is getting charged while plugged in, so it's not a connectivity error. Has anybody else had a similar problem?

Macbook Pro, Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Do you have a post-march 2007 BMW with the connections in the center console? If yes, they should have given you a special cable that connects to the dock connector of your phone and has two connectors on the other end, a USB male and a 3.5mm male. You insert the USB into its slot and the male 3.5mm into the female jack in the center console.

This will let you play music through the stereo system, it will not let you access any telephone services. Without bluetooth you have no way to do that.
