2nd ext HD- Firewire or USB 2.0

Hi- I've recently moved my itunes library off my imac G5 and on to a 250G external drive w/ firewire. I bought a second 250G ext drive w/ firewire to back that up. My question is, should I have saved some money and gone with a USB 2.0 drive, since it's a secondary external?

Thanks!

NO!!!!! Thank your lucky stars you chose firewire! (Remember the adage--you get what you pay for!)

Here's my sad tale--two 250 gbs. external hard-drives--both capable of USB 2.0 and firewire connections. To distinguish between them I hooked one up via firewire and the other via USB 2.0. Unfortunately, I chose the USB 2.0 drive for my music files! Well, I experienced an I/O error within months after loading this harddrive with 250 gbs. of lovingly ripped CDs! The drive became unformatted and I lost all of my music. At first I thought I did something wrong, so I sat hour after hour, day after day re-ripping all of this music--only to encounter the same error about two months later. NOW I WAS MAD!

I contacted my hard-drive manufacturer (Maxtor) who thought maybe the drive was faulty and sent me a replacement (no complaints against Maxtor!) I used a hard drive recovery program this time and I was able to recover my music files (with the exception of a few corrupted ones (in the bad sector) that had to be re-ripped.

Anyway during this whole ordeal I learned that hooking hard drives up via USB jacks is risky. Apparently, in Windows, USB devices perform tons of Input/Output operations (I/O). If something goes wrong during one of these operations the whole drive can become unformatted and useless! Firewire does not do this. My older firewire drive has been reliable from day one. It has survived system crashes during thunderstorms, mistaken power disconnects, etc. and everything is still intact.

Now, I hook all external drives up via Firewire--if they are up and running all the time. A backup (for a quick in and out drive--I do use USB 2.0--but only for this kind of backup.)

Trust me, you can't go wrong with Firewire!

Hmmmm! Thanks, once again Chris CA!

Why do I think you're my Nemesis?

Ummm, maybe it's because you follow me around and put down ANY response I make? God, I'm sick of this! I actually do know what I'm talking about when it comes to Windows computers. Believe it or not, I do help many of my friends fix their Windows computers. And, (knock on wood) to this day, I've never Not fixed a friend's computer!

Last I checked you own a Mac--so I'm asking what makes you a Windows expert? (Do you have a side windows computer you're not reporting? Otherwise, just back off on Windows posts--you don't know what you're talking about because you have no real experience. Trust me, once I realize I'm in a Mac forum, I bow out as quickly as possible. I know NOTHING about Macs! And, I'm not ashamed to admit it!)

(I know you have a lot of "points". So you expect posters to back off because--my GOD, yikes, you have four bars!!!!!! OH well, after multiple wrong dealings with you, I'm not backing off...get over it okay?) So quit following me around!

Now, once and for all I want you to admit that I do know what I'm talking about....If you can't then, we'll see...

Perhaps you could explain what this has to do with this topic?
Perhaps you should pay a bit more attention to what the OP is posting, especially before you start jumping on people.

Trust me, once I realize I'm in a Mac forum, I bow out as quickly as possible. I know NOTHING about Macs!
Then why are you jumping on me and trying to assist the OP with his Mac?

This is the iTunes for Windows forum.
The OP is asking about his iMac.
He posted in both forums, which is why I told him (not you) that I responded in the other forum.

Last I checked you own a Mac--so I'm asking what makes you a Windows expert?
I don't own one but I have been using DOS/Windows for the last 16+ years.

My posts have very little, if anything, to do with you.
Perhaps, if your post needs a bit of clarification or additional detail I may add something, but it's not about you.

samdogmom,

No apologies necessary.

Why do I think you're my Nemesis?
No idea but I wish I knew.

(Do you have a side windows computer you're not reporting?
I'm not "required" to "report" anything in my sig line.

I don't "follow you around" and I don't believe I have put down any of your responses.
My response in this thread did not address you or anything you wrote, so your extreme post to me was a bit perplexing and completely uncalled for in this post, let alone any other post.
