playing an .iso in vlc or dvd software without burning

how do you play a dvd .iso image so that it boots up like a dvd?

instead of extracting the vob files..

Macbook 2.16ghz 1gb ram 8xsuperdrive white, Mac OS X (10.4.9)

With VLC, use "Quick Open File..." ("File" menu), or just drag the .iso file onto VLC's dock icon.

With Apple's DVD Player you have to mount (double-click or Open) the .iso file first. Then. if you start the DVD Player application it should start playing just as if you had inserted a DVD. If it doesn't, use "Open DVD Media..." ("File" menu) to select the VIDEO_TS folder, or drag the VIDEO_TS folder to DVD's dock icon. (If you have to do this, it may mean the .iso file is not in UDF format, so may not play in most DVD players.)
