Hitachi Video Camera

Question

Hitachi Video Camera

I am trying to import a video from a Hitachi camera. I do not have a firewire, but USB. According to the help. I should be able to see the video on my hard disk, which I do, but when I try to drag the files to iMoive it shows that it is importing, but nothing shows up?

Welcome to the forum Nicole,

"Hitachi camera" really tells us nothing. If you looked/searched at any of the previous posts here, you might have seen NUMEROUS questions from new camcorder owners about capturing problems. Invariably, these questions come from people who have bought DVD or hard drive cams. What exactly do you have?

It is a Ultravision Digital with DVD-RAM/R recording. Does this help?

While reading the other questions, I think I found my problem. The file are .vob files. From what I read these need to be converted into mpeg files. Do you have a websit where I can get the info to do this?

That helps immensely, thanks. So, now the bad news. iMovie is designed to work with DV Stream. Your DVD recorder does not record in this format.

You can get software that allows you to convert the video on your DVD cam to DV, but at a cost of some image quality and some tedious extra work. If you only just got the cam, I suggest you return it for a miniDV cam, which is the only platform that Mac's love to see. Failing that, please do a search through even just today's threads here and you will see the answers that you need.

MPEG Streamclip is a free programme (Google it) and it will convert VOB files.

.. if you purchase (19$) and install the mpeg2-payback component from apple.com ...

a new kid on the block claims to convert vob to dv for free ...
