VPN using IPSecuritas >> How to tell if it's Secure ??

Hi,

I have set-up an office with a Linksys BEFSX41 VPN Router...

I then connect to this with IP Securitas, using a Static IP. IP Securitas connects fine, and i get the 'green light'.

I want to connect to a server in the office, and access shared volumes...

How do i do this & most importantly how do i do it securely ? Is there some test i can run that tells me that my data is being sent securely ?

eg Should i have port forwarding set-up on the VPN router, and should I use the finders "GO > Connect to Server" menu & using the routers static IP or a different IP ?

Cheers,

Charlie

No. The whole point of the VPN is that your client appears to be on the internal network, therefore you don't need to do any port forwarding.

You should connect to the internal address of the server you're trying to connect to - e.g. the 192.168.x.x, 10.x.x.x address, etc., not the public IP address.

Any traffic sent to the public IP address will not be secure.

Hi thanks for this, it is really helpful.

Following you advice, i have tried using the "go" menu > "Connect to Server" and entering the IP address of the Server (the internal 192.168.1.101 address not the public IP address).

I have done this when IP Securitas is telling me that my VPN is active. It doesn't seam to work though.. Is there something else i am missing ?

To Give More Background:
The VPN is setup to connect to a Linksys Router in the remote office. That router also acts as the DHCP router for the entire remote office. I tell IP Securitas to use a virtual IP Address (which is 192.168.1.200 to ensure i'm in the same subnet, so i can try accessing the server)

When trying to access the server at 192.168.1.101 it doesn't seam to do much... I would have assumed when connected to the VPN that i could even use the Go>Network menu to view all the shared computers on the network...

Any Advice/suggestions/tools to check my settings are correct would be welcome.

Cheers.

Charlie
