Redirecting iWeb created site using GoDaddy

I created a website through iWeb and bought a domain name through GoDaddy. I uploaded all my files to my account on GoDaddy -- but for some reason my website doesn't work. My domain name is www.ericmolinsky.com and the iWeb folder was called Pieces and Podcasts. When I type in my domain name, this is what appears in the URL:

http://www.ericmolinsky.com/Eric%20Molinsky/Pieces%20and%20Podcasts/Pieces%20and %20Podcasts.html

The customer service rep at GoDaddy told me that everything is directed properly on the GoDaddy site, the problem is within iWeb. I need to "remove the redirect" problem on my Mac.

I'm concerned the problem is that I named my project with spaces, Pieces and Podcasts instead of piecesandpodcasts. And my folder in iWeb is Eric Molinsky, rather than ericmolinsky. If I rename everything without spaces, will I have to start over and upload everything to the ftp site? It took three hours the last time, with all the visual and audio files, not to mention the extra time on the phone with customer service reps.

Also, the folks at GoDaddy asked me to rename my html file, index.html. But I read that could cause a problem as well.

Any suggestions???

It may be that you did not do this correctly. You must use a real ftp program like Cyberduck. Did you? Then you must upload just two items: The folder produced by iWeb which has the same name as your site does inside the iWeb app, plus the index.html file published alongside that folder. When you upload the folder, its contents (including another folder called Pieces and Podcasts) should be uploaded automatically.

I don't think spaces matter with Godaddy and there is nothing you should change with the structure or files that iWeb produces.

Basically that's what I did. I uploaded the folder created by iWeb and the index.html file but I used Fetch rather than Cyberduck. The files were definitely intact in my Go Daddy account.

The customer service rep thought that I needed to remove the "redirect" problem in iWeb. For some reason, it wasn't directing all the information straight to my domain name. That didn't make sense to me, but she was by far the most knowledgeable person I spoke with over there.

This can get confusing without being able to see the server itself. The problem may be within the file structure. Different servers have multiple folders arranged in different ways.

Can you describe what folders you see and where your data is, including the index file?

I wouldn't worry about the spacing. As you can see, '%20' is used in place of spaces. URL encoding will not allow certain characters and, instead, shows a 'hexadecimal' representation. As long as you use the spaces consistently on your site, it will not be a problem. You may want to consider underscores, however. This will make it easier on the eyes (Eric_Molinsky) on both the design and in the address bar.

Thank you for your help. Hopefully this will make sense. On my iMac:

Sites >
image folder (3 gifs inside) and Eric Molinsky folder >
index.html and Eric Molinsky folder >
images folder (8 jpgs inside), index.html and Pieces and Podcasts folder

There are 16 folders inside Pieces and Podcasts:

13 folders correspond to a page within my website. There is an html doc to accompany each folder.
1 folder is my achieve page.
1 empty folder labed images.
1 folder called, "Pieces and Podcast_files" contains 23 png images called "sharpimage." And there are a couple assorted gifs and jpgs
Finally there is a copy of the index.html.

Using Fetch, I uploaded the second "Eric Molinsky" folder that contains most of the files and the first copy of the index.html.

index.html and Eric Molinsky folder >

and Podcasts folder

Of that stuff, I think probably the only things you should be uploading are the last two items mentioned, index.html and Pieces and Podcasts folder.

But to be sure, I would recommend you republish from iWeb directly to your Desktop so the things produced by iWeb don't get mixed up with other things that might be in Sites.

I do publish directly to the Sites folder, since I don't have a .mac account. I can tell you what's in the ftp folder. Maybe you can see something that I should delete.

In the ftp folder:

index.html
missing.html
welcome.html
gdform.php (Plain text document)
php.ini (TextEdit Document)
favicon.ico (windows icon image)
.hcc.thumbs folder > .hcc documents
stats folder > .statspwd and older version of index.html
php_uploads folder (blank)
Eric Molinsky folder > index.html and Pieces and Podcasts folder > Images folder, index.html and Pieces and Podcasts folder

I don't know how I ended up with two Pieces and Podcasts folders, but the second one has all the information I mentioned in the last email.

As said before, I recommend you publish to your Desktop and not to the Sites folder. That will keep what iWeb is producing separate from other stuff.

In the ftp folder:

index.html
missing.html
welcome.html
gdform.php (Plain text document)
php.ini (TextEdit Document)
favicon.ico (windows icon image)
.hcc.thumbs folder > .hcc documents
stats folder > .statspwd and older version of
index.html
php_uploads folder (blank)
Eric Molinsky folder > index.html and Pieces and
Podcasts folder > Images folder, index.html and
Pieces and Podcasts folder

I would recommend deleting the Eric Molinsky folder. The upload just the two items which iWeb publishes to your desktop, which are probably an index.html file and a Pieces and Podcasts folder.

Okay, I deleted what I had previously in my ftp folder. I re-saved the iWeb project to the desktop. I uploaded just what was in the folder: index.html, images folder and the Pieces and Podcasts folder. The website still isn't up. Rather than ericmolinsky.com, I'm still getting this strange URL:

http://www.ericmolinsky.com/Eric%20Molinsky/Pieces%20and%20Podcasts/Pieces%20and %20Podcasts.html

Is Eric Molinsky the name of your site inside the iWeb app? Then my earlier instructions were not correct. You need to upload the folder called Eric Molinsky plus the index.html created by iWeb alongside it.

Do you by any chance have more than one site inside the iWeb app? If so, make sure the site you are uploading is at the top of the list before you publish, otherwise the index.html will not point to the right place.

What is the name of the topmost page of your topmost site inside the iWeb app?

There is only one website, but it's a podcast style webpage, so there is a main page and about 13 entries where someone can hear different audio files.

When I saved it to my desktop, the folder was called Eric Molinsky. I dragged the contents of that folder on to the ftp site, but not the folder called Eric Molinsky. Should I create an empty folder called Eric Molinsky on my ftp site and put everything I uploaded inside that folder, mimicking what's on my desktop?

8A1A9C16-C782-408C-9D39-D42A16A17823_files is the title of the first folder inside the Pieces and Podcasts folder.

What is the name of the site inside iWeb? I assume it must be Eric Molinsky, right?

Should I create an empty folder called Eric
Molinsky on my ftp site and put everything I uploaded

Yes, if my assumption above is correct. Leave the index.html outside the Eric Molinsky folder.

Also, do you have a file called Pieces and Podcasts.html inside the folder with the same name?

Jul 17, 2007 1:31 PM in response to Tom Gewecke

The service is free from Go Daddy, although I paid for the domain name.

The name of the site inside iWeb is called Eric Molinsky.

There was a Pieces and Podcasts.html inside the folder, but I renamed it index.html.

I created an Eric Molinsky folder within the ftp site and put everything inside, just like my desktop. It didn't help. Then I renamed the html file inside Pieces and Podcasts, "Pieces and Podcasts.html" rather than "index.html" on my Desktop and dragged that on to the ftp site. It still doesn't work.

Best to never name any page index.html.

I created an Eric Molinsky folder within the ftp site
I renamed the html file inside
Pieces and Podcasts, "Pieces and Podcasts.html"
rather than "index.html" on my Desktop and dragged
that on to the ftp site.

That should fix it at least partially.

It still doesn't work.

Actually it does: Try clicking on this

http://www.ericmolinsky.com/Eric%20Molinsky/Pieces%20and%20Podcasts/Pieces%20and %20Podcasts.html

The only thing missing so you can use the short url is the index.html which iWeb generates alongside the Eric Molinsky folder when you publish to your desktop.
