iMac keyboard broken? Cleaning it? Any USB keyboard compatible with OS 9?

I think my girlfriend's iMac (bondi blue, + upgrades) keyboard is messed-up.

It's pretty dirty, and when she was using it last night she said it suddenly started doing "strange" things when she types, like new windows opening-up & stuff like that. Some letters do nothing. Mouse works ok though.

Overall it sounds to me like one of the command keys is stuck "on".

Do those pop-off the keyboard easily? How? Any recommendations on how to clean inside there? Can the keyboard be easily disassembled? Should I? I believe I've read elsewhere that a vacuum may be a bad thing because air flow across a circuit board can create static charge?

If the keyboard needs replacing, apparently we can use any ole' Mac-compatible USB keyboard, not just an iMac-specific one? But then when I look at, say, Apple's keyboard, it says it needs OS 10.2, and she's stuck with OS 9. Will the keyboard still work ok, or just some keys not function right?

Bondi blue iMac (with upgrades), Mac OS 9.2.x

Hey Jason,
Before you pop off any keys go around to all the keys and press them. If any seem sticky make a note. Those keys just pop off, use a butter knife. There's just two notched slots and a center actuator button. You can clean the smutz off with a damp toothbrush.

If it's really bad an a lot of liquid has been spilled on it the circuit board underneath might be damaged. But if that happens the "crazy things" will be consistent. I've fixed those with and automotive rear window heater repair kit.

I've used PC USB keyboards from Sonys, Dells. These work fine it just drives me nuts that the Apple key is the Windows key. All the Apple B&W G3, G4, iMac and eMac keyboards will work. I think the nicest is the Pro keyboard the clear one with the eject button.

Mice all the PC USB mice work, my kids like the Pro mouse because of the laser.
