What is the difference between .mpeg and .mpg???

Help!

I'm trying to upload footage to a television network server for a news show. The specs they request are:

Format: MPEG2
Type: NTSC
stream: Program or Transport
Bitrate: 8 Mbps - 15 Mbps (CBR)
Audio: MPEG1 layer 1 or 2? (not sure I now what this is)

Using Compressor I'm making an MPEG2 with AIF audio. I can't seem to control the VBR\CBR with the MPEG2 setup in Compressor. I set the 'low' bitrate to 8 Mbps (which is too high for a DVD I know).

Using MPEG Streamclip I create an .mpeg file with MP2 audio. Which is an .mpeg file.

The network erver says it only accepts .mpg files.

What is the difference, pray tell, and how can I create an .mpg file (with "MPEG 1 layer 1 or 2 audio") using Final Cut or Compressor? Or Quicktime?

Thank you,

Ben

Using MPEG Streamclip with MP2 audio you are making a file with MPEG-2 audio.

If you cannot control the bitrate consider Toast. You can set its compressor to both max and average bitrates, and while it outputs AC3 you should be able to open that in Streamclip and export with MP2 audio later.

Rename to MPG vs. MPEG if you like - say yes when OSX says "Ohmygod don't!" as it matters not a whit. MPG should ALWAYS work where MPEG as an extension may not at times.
