The audio file "filename.caf" has a 0 bit format and can't be used.

Each time GarageBand attempts to access an apple loop from the Final Cut Studio content, I recieve an error "The audio file "filename.caf" has a 0 bit format and can't be used."

Any thoughts what might be wrong?

Hi,

there appear to be no tools to create music in Soundtrack Pro.

STP is designed specifically to work with existing sound in a soundtrack environment (hence, the name).
Apple has several programs, as you probably know, such as Logic Pro, Logic Express, and GarageBand, that Are designed specifically for music recording, editing, and production.

So how do you uses the loops included with the suite, because they aren't useful in any of the actual suite apps.

So here's a little bit on one end of the equation:

Core Audio Format (CAF), developed by Apple, "combines virtually infinite capacity with rich support for metadata in an optimized-for-audio package. As a 64-bit file format, you can record a thousand channels of audio for a thousand years in a single file. And it can store any audio data, whether uncompressed PCM or compressed such as AAC." (from Apple)

So, as a 64-bit file format that can store a huge amount of Audio, as well as many other types of information, it's not a file type that GarageBand would recognize or be able to use. (of course, .caf files work great for STP)

And here's some more on the other end:

A portion of the files installed with the Soundtrack Pro 2 audio content collection are CAF (Apple Core Audio Format) versions of the AIFF files that were installed with Soundtrack Pro 1.x.
Note: If you use applications, such as GarageBand, Logic Pro, or Logic Express, that only support AIFF Apple Loops files, you may want to leave your Soundtrack Pro 1.x audio content files in place. (from STP2 release notes)

Use Disk Utility to repair your system permissions (/Applications/Utilities);
Then, trash your GarageBand Preference files (don't worry, it will replace them; you can reset any prefs to what they were in the app)
Search for the two files:
com.apple.garageband.cs -and-
com.apple.garageband.plist
and discard them.
(Normally, they are in /Library/Preferences/ or in user/Library/Preferences/
but do a search to make sure you get all the copies.)

Ok, this is what I found out, the CAF files are the new format that apple uses, it is an "improvement" from the regular AIFF that have been used in the past. So here it is...

You can't use any of the Soundtrack files in FCS2 in Garageband unless, you buy iLife 08. The new version of Garageband will read the caf files.

However, if you have a version of FINAL CUT EXPRESS HD. Soundtrack in that has all the same loops in AIFF file format that you can use in Garageband, I reinstalled it on my cpu and it worked. You will see that the files repeat on the loops list. One will say "can't use" the other will work.

So if you have the time you could probably trash the right loops from Soundtrack pro and it would work from Soundtrack (FCEXHD). I however am just too lazy to deal with that right now.

If you don't have FCUEXHD. Then you have to drop 80 bones at apple for the new caf readable Garageband. I stinks but what else can you do?
