Why won't Windows won't recognize USB device (my Ipod)?

Are other USB devices recognized?

You say that you can't access your music. Can you access anything on the iPod?

This is over my head. However, the Windoze message appears to be a lie because it knows that something is there but it can't identify what it is.

You might want to start a new thread. Experienced posters frequently ignore threads with many posts because it appears as if the problem is under control.

Have you attempted plugging the iPod into a different computer? If so, do you get the same message?

Is the iPod recognized in the device manager? (right click my computer, properties, hardware tab, device manager, scroll down to USB; check and see if there is anything called iPod or USB mass storage device) Be sure that all other USB devices (excluding your mouse or keyboard) have been removed from the computer.

Sounds like your computer has the problem.

Use the computer that works.

Try uninstalling the USB drivers for the iPod ( http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305136).

Also, you may want to try testing with another cable, because some cables with a faulty connection can make that error appear on a Windows computer.

If those don't work, you may need a driver update for the computer. The main driver the iPod runs from is in C:\Windows\INF, and is called USBStor. YOu may also want to try finding and re-downloading USBStor.inf from a 3rd party website (as Microsoft doesn't host this file to download).

Hmmm... any other USB devices attached to the computer (printer, scanner, camera, Palm Pilot, etc.)? If so, try removing them, and then plugging in the iPod. That may work.
