Minidisc stuck in MacBook Pro

Yep, I did it, stuffed a minidisc in the Book's drive and now it's stuck inside. The Mac doesn't recognize it and won't spit it out. I tried rebooting a couple of times, heard the drive spin up, but the disk is still in there. Anyone have any ideas how to get the disc out?

haha...hah... HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH... I'm sorry it's just HAHAHAHHAHA

dude. I'm actually impressed you could get that into the 3mm opening of the superdrive.

Now. To get it out? Try getting two very small, long, and sturdy pieces of metal and try to pull it out from both sides at the same time. If you take a paperclip and make it into a long L shape, you may be able to pull the minidisc out by getting the bent part of the paperclip behind it. I had luck doing this to get a miniCD out of the slot loading drive once.

I really doubt he got a Sony MiniDisc in the slot since a MiniDisk is about 1/4" think and nobody is going to think a CD/DVD drive sudenly takes MiniDiscs.

It is a "mini" disc and he can try using tools but I am not a big advocate of sticking long sturdy pieces of metal in the case as he may damage the drive and other components.

Applecare/Apple Store, pay for them to open it and take your lumps is a far better idea.

Yep, it's one of those mini CD's that software is getting distributed on these days, not the Sony version. It fit in the slot just fine...and then disappeared for good.

I tried the L-shaped paper clips but this wasn't successful and I'm worried about damaging the drive. The drive has to come out, no doubt about it. The Book's only two months old, I wonder if this is even covered under warranty. Guess it's a trip to the Apple Store tomorrow.

Hmm...

You have few choices.

1. Take the machine into a Apple Store and get charged for having the CD disc removed.

2. Play around with the machine, shake it, stick things into the slot etc and pray!

or

3. Take the top of yourself. There are guides online for users to upgrade the parts that apple suggest you don't.

(e.g. http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/)

Now.. if your careful with a precision screw driver and torx, you could remove all the screws and sort your machine out. But damaging the screws or anything inside will ultimately void your warranty and possibly kill your machine.

Personally I'd take option 2 first... then find out how much it might cost.. and at a last resort, DIY.

That did it! Didn't have a business card handy so I took a regular CD and looped a piece of scotch tape onto the surface near the center. After flattening down the tape, it radiated out from the center hole to about 3/4 the diameter of the CD. Stuck it in the drive, pushed down on it from the top, and pulled it out. There ya go, out comes the mini CD. Thanks!

Just wanted to report another case of successful minidisc extraction. Unaware that the MacBook can't accommodate the 8 mm minidisc from our camcorder, my daughter pushed one in the slot. After reading this post, I put some double-sided tape on a business card and gently pushed it into the slot. After fishing around in there -- carefully! -- for about 20 seconds, the minidisc came out! Give it a try!

me too..
I stupidly inserted a 2.5" cd into my macbook pro drive.. I learned too late that that's a no-no..
(why oh why is there no cautions about not doing this ??) anyway..
So I found this thread and tried taping a super sticky postit note (sticky side out) to a plastic target gift card.. Inserted the card, wiggled it a bit and pulled it out.. w/ the dumb cd on it !! first go.. Thanks to the previous writers.. !!
and to 3M for yet another use for postits.. Everything works fine and no trips to the mac store.. ..
signed.. "Too soon olt.. too late schmart" !!

Somewhere, buried in tons of dos and don'ts is the warning that the drive only works with standard sized disks, but you are correct in that it is not obvious that the small CD would be taboo. Fortunately they "fall" out quite easily, but I would hate to think what would happen to a "thick" small CD, knowing that even the "thick" normal CDs and DVDs occasionally get stuck in the apple drive.
