Thanks for the response.

Yes i can launch iTunes manually, but i dont see any indication that it recognizes the iPhone.

the iPhone screen just shows the banner saying to connect to itunes, but i cant do anything other than make an emergency call.

there is a picture of a lock at the top center of the iPhone, is this a problem? i cant see how to turn it off.

do you know how to turn off image capture on XP? Three programs, Windows fax viewer, cannon camera window, and Adobe album starter all fight to download the pics off my iphone....untill today when my computer stopped recognizing my iphone all together. I read the troubleshooting section of the users manual and have reset the phone, restarted my computer, reinstalled itunes. I don't have the energy to restore all settings, the phone works good, but there won't be any sync-ing going on until I get this fixed. Problems have been happening ever since I purchased the PRO edition of Quicktime to convert my slideshows for the iphone. That still doesn't work, they come out pixelated and have no sound. One full day of dinking with that and my 400GB external started having delayed write failures and then I fixed it once by running the chkdsk utility, so it ran all night recovered almost everything--then after 20 minutes it completely crashed. My son recovered the data for me on his computer. Now the iphone won't sync. Any ideas?? you seem like a knowlegable sourse of info? Thx if you have the time!
