Mac Pro wpn't boot

I recently started having problems with my Mac Pro. Shortly after updating to 10.4.10, it stopped recognizing that it had a DVD drive. Now, it won't boot when I hold down the option key - it just displays a who're screen. Nor will it boot into Windows, and since I set the startup disk to the Windows partition, I'm sort of sol at the moment. Any clues for diagnosis/repair?

Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.4.10)

Try booting off the Installation DVD 1 and once you're past the language selection go into Disk Utility (via the menus) and try repairing both the disk and disk permissions.

Zap the PRAM/NVRAM by holding down 4 keys on cold boot:
command + option + p + r

continue holding while it boots twice, then let go. That clears the startup disk and will have to reset it when you can again.

Install or clone OS X to another drive as soon as possible.

It may have more to do with a SuperDrive firmware update rather than 10.4.10 itself.

I successfully zapped the PRAM, but unfortunately that hasn't changed the behavior at all. Time for AppleCare I think. Thanks for the suggestion!

Sadly, because the machine doesn't recognize the DVD drive, I can't boot from the DVD. Thanks anyway!
