How identify myself in iPhone contacts?

Hi all. Anyone know how I tell my iPhone which contact is me? My record in the address book on my mac is identified as me, but that identification does not get transferred to the iPhone along with the rest of the info.

One interesting result of this is that when my phone syncs, the iTunes screen giving information about the phone attached knows the phone's serial number, but not its telephone number.

Graham Burnette,

I apologize if you were misinformed about where the phone number comes from.

It does come from the SIM card, after activation. Sometimes, powering off the phone for a few minutes, and powering it back on will allow the iPhone to read the information off the SIM card.

Thanks for answering, Leone. When you sync your iPhone, does the Summary screen in iTunes show "n/a" for the phone number, or does it show your phone number? If it shows the phone number, how does it get that information? I was told by applecare earlier today that the phone gets that information from the "me" card in address book on the mac. Were they wrong?

Graham, you're welcome. I think applecare may be wrong on this one. Not sure... but....

When i sync, my phone number shows up in the summary along with my name because that is what i typed when the phone was activated/registered. If you're not seeing your number and name up there, try powering the phone off and pulling the SIM card out (using a paperclip to release the SIM card) and try re-seating the SIM card. Just reinstall it and power the iphone on and check iTunes.

I actually had the same issue where it said n/a as the phone number. It eventually came back, I think from a restart on my mac and iPhone.

About the address card.... no offense, but don't you know who you are?

That was a good idea, but it didn't change anything. I think tomorrow morning at work, I will try connecting my phone to my desktop mac there and see if this is something in my macbook or if it is something in the phone itself.

Cute comment, Toren, but my thinking is that an iPhone is a pretty small and mobile device. I might drop it or leave it somewhere. And a nice person might find it. It sure would be nice for that person to know who to call and say "I found your iPhone" wouldn't it?

I had exactly same problem you have, I've tried restart phone and restore software you name it, Also I went apple store,
but all didn't work, Then I went to AT&T store to ask replace the SIM card, Then I activate again. Finally problem resolved.

I recommend you create a note that says "If found return to...".

Also, In your favorites, make sure to place at the top those contacts you would want somebody who finds your phone to try first.

I experimented with creating contacts labeled "If Found Please Return to" and "In Case of Emergency", and then putting them in my favorites. The problem with that is for incoming calls, the caller ID will say "In case of Emergency" instead of the person's name and picture. I finally eliminated the phone numbers from my In Case of Emergency contact and put the phone numbers in the notes section of the contact...but then because there are no phone numbers, I was not allowed to put this in the favorites.

I think this would be an easy fix for Apple in the next release.

Thanks, Nathan. I did try to power off and back on again (power was off for 15 minutes this time), but still no number shows up in iTunes. I have an appt at the Palo Alto store on Friday, so maybe they will have an idea there. Otherwise, it sounds like I may need to get AT&T to swap out my sim.

This question is now resolved. I did need to get a replacement SIM and activate my iPhone again - at which time the iPhone recognized what its phone number was.

iPhones does not seem to recognize the "This is Me" card. Perhaps in a future update of iPhone software we'll see that feature 😉
