Printing from any application causes it to crash

If I print from any application that application crashes before the print dialog even opens. Other applications do not crash.

I can print a test page directly from CUPS with no problem, so this is a higher level problem.

The problem occurred at some point after upgrading from 10.4.9 to 10.4.10 and installing Classic (after having avoided it for years) from the Tiger install disk that came with the PowerBook (so the install disk was a previous version of Tiger).

Any ideas? Thanks.

I don't have any answers for you, but I have had similar, recent problem. I have set up a new airport extreme network with my Powerbook G3 and two windows boxes. The windows machines can print to the printers fine, but now everytime I try to print from any application, any file type, the application crashes before it gets to the print dialog box. There is a delay while the computer seems to think about whether the app will crash, then it invariably does. This started after upgrading Adobe reader to version 8. I've removed it but still same thing. I actually upgraded from 10.4.5 to 10.4.10, as well as upgraded Quicktime and the latest security update, thinking this might fix it, but no.
You might want to try to run Disk Utility to scan your hard drive and make sure all the permissions are correct. I did this and the hard drive volume is fine, some of the permissions did get corrected, but still can't print without the app crashing.

I looked at the crash report for a couple of programs, and they all had the text below at the top. Looks like my issue is related to com.apple.print.framework.Print.Private. I've run disk utility and fixed permissions and that did not help. Any ideas on what would break at this particular point?

Halistemma;
That was indeed quite brilliant suggestion, and worked for me, so far. I have not tried to print from networked printers yet.
To others that might still be trying to resolve this issue, you might want to try to download freeware utility called Onyx. Then under the maintainence tab, check LaunchServices database, then check reset. This deletes the cache database of links between applications and documents, then starts a new one. Your documents will still open the correct apps, but if there were some error or corruption there between application and say printer drivers, it might correct it.
I did this and then reset printer setup per Halistemma's suggestion and now I can at least print to some of my printers (haven't tried all of them yet).

I'm afraid that neither of the solutions above worked for me - print utility reset or Onyx. The problem only occurs when trying to print on my network from a new Macbook OS10.4.10 through Airport to an HP printer connected to an older iMac G5 (also 10.4.10). If I plug the Macbook in directly, it works. The Macbook finds the shared printer OK on the network.

I managed to make the idea suggested of loging on to the iMac work once, but I'm not sure how, nd couldn't repeat it.

At least I have discovered that there are others out there with the problem.

Grrrrrr!

Why has this thread been marked as 'answered'? As far as I can read, we are none of us the wiser .... meanwhle my wife has to pass everything she wants printed to me on a memory stick. Not very hi-tech.

But sharing i-tunes is brilliant .... all I have to do is figure the B&O connection to get my music in full glorious surround in the living room (OK, that's not a Mac question).

Looking back over the contributions to this thread, I see a number of references to 'frameworks'. Yes I did delete the hpimaging.framework folder and it was no help.

But here's a curious thing: every time I open an MS Office application, it presents ths error message: "An unexpected error occurred while trying to load the Microsoft Framework Library". I just ignore it as it doesn't seem to affect the functionality of Word, Excel, etc.

But that word 'Framework' again ... could this be a clue that someone knowledgable might be able to build on, with regard to our 'printing crashes applications' problem?

Aug 3, 2007 9:35 AM in response to halistemma

I am also having this problem. i.e. printing from any application on an Intel Mac Mini to an HP 6210 All-in-One printer shared from a PowerPC G4 Mac causes any application to crash. However, printing to the network printer from a PowerPC MacBook works.

Here is the complete crash dump. I am a Linux guy, but I assume that an EXC BADACCESS is a Segmentation Fault. 'libAiOHPUtils.10.dylib' is the source of this problem. Above, someone mentioned that reinstalling the drivers didn't help, so I'm at a loss--has anyone had this problem the other way around? i.e. printing to an intel mac from a ppc? I think i'll just network the printer from a different box 😉

I just recently added our first mac (intel mac pro, 10.4.9) to our widows network. This is also the first mac I’ve worked with. I’ve been trying to find a solution for our applications crashing when print is selected.

I haven’t seen a solution in this forum yet that seems to resolve the problem. I did resolve my problem today and thought I should share what I’ve found.

We have about 15 network printers ranging from small format b/w and color to wide-format b/w and color printers. We need the mac to help improve our ability to deal with large files using adobe software.

I started installing the small format printers first. B/W printers and two of our fiery color laser printers installed with no problems. The first time selecting print crashed the program, I had just installed #3 fiery color printer. After trying several things I deleted the #3 fiery printer. Then I could print to the other network printers again. I found the driver I selected wasn’t the correct one and (I guess) caused the crashing problem.

The second time this happened was a little different. I now had most of the small format printers connected and was installing the first of our epson wide-format network printers. I was having problems installing it so I went to apple’s website that linked me to epson’s latest mac drivers. This driver required that I double click the icon and it installs the files automatically. I then added the printer.

Once again when selecting print the program (adobe ps and acrobat) would crash. I figured the epson was doing this as I had just installed it. So I deleted the epson. Still crashed. I uninstalled the epson files with no luck. Tried several things I found in this forum without any luck.

Today I decided to try deleting all the printers I had installed one by one, and try to print after deleting each one. Luckily the first one I deleted (one of the fiery color printers) resolved the problem. I have since reinstalled the fiery printer with no problems. It seems the epson driver somehow may have corrupted the fiery driver???

I don’t know how or why one print driver will crash the whole print ability, but it seems to be how it is. It may not work for anyone else but I would try deleting printers and testing each time until (hopefully) the ability to print works again.

I’m concerned now about adding the wide-format epson’s to the mac. For now I’ll print to them through the windows systems.

Maybe Leopard will resolve this issue?

I have the same problem with DELL drivers for Laser printers (3100cn, 3110cn, 5100cn). Everything worked fine with many other printers (HP, Xerox, Canon, etc.) until I installed a DELL driver.
This occured on two different PPC Macs (10.4.9 and 10.4.10). I have not yet tried to remove the printers one by one and reintroduce them in a different order as suggested in this forum. When you have many printers installed on several computers you think twice before doing this !!
