installing itunes on external hard drive

wondering if there is a way to move itunes (and all its necessary paraphernalia) to an external harddrive? I've got an 8G nano and all the music is just filling up my computer and slowing it down. Wondering if I just "move" itunes and my music folder to my external drive if the ipod will sense where it is when I plug it in for sync?

Any help appreciated, thx.

To move your iTunes music...

  1. Quit iTunes.
  2. Move the entire iTunes folder including music to the external drive.
  3. Click on the iTunes icon to start it, then immediately press an hold the Shift key in Windows, Option key in Mac.
  4. iTunes will ask to Create new library or Choose existing library. Select Choose existing library and select the library in the folder you just moved.
  5. Move the old iTunes folder to the trash but do not empty it.
  6. Restart iTunes normally and verify the songs work. If they do, empty the trash.
