Files saved from pc to ipod - can't find files when ipod attached to imac

A month ago I transferred data files from my Dell laptop to my iPod Shuffle (first generation). I want to save those files to my mac and then delete them from the ipod. The problem is that I can't view the non-music files on the ipod as I guess they are hidden. I have set the ipod to enable disk use. All I see is 231.7 MB of space taken up by "Other". When I double click on the ipod icon, I get only a bootex.log file and an apparently empty desktop folder.
