Is It Possible To Play My iPhone Through My Car Stereo?

I was wondering if there was a cord that would go in my cigarette lighter and allow me to play my iPhone through the stereo?

I had a cord for my iPod but it got stolen but the cord didn't work with my iPhone.

Thanks,
Sam

Belkin offers such a product.
It is designed for the iPod but works perfectly with the iPhone.
Charges, has volume control and can plug into a aux port or
use a cassette transfer.

I have a Belkin car charger/adaptor that does NOT work correctly with the iPhone. It charges the phone, but the audio doesn't work, since it still plays out of the little speaker at the base of the iPhone, rather than via the dock connector. The iPhone also gives the familiar 'error' that the adaptor isn't iPhone compatible.

Do you have a link for the working Belkin model?

I bought a two way auxiliary plug from Radio Shack, but you also need an adapter that is sold on Apple for $10, asd the two-way doesn't fit solidly into the phone.
I got it and plugged it in, but still can't figure out how to make it work. I Have
a lexus w/ navigation system, and I thought you just push the CD on. But that didn't work. Can anyone tell me what to do?

The cigarette lighter, which I have, will recharge, but in order to hear it through the car, you need an auxiliary cord
( both ends look like the plug that goes into the earphone jack), plus an adapter that you can buy from Apple for $10 online, and then it will play through the car, if I could ever figure out how.

Your Lexus with nav is likely rather more sophisticated than my Toyota system, but on mine the stereo needs to be set to AUX (the auxiliary input connector) in order to play an external device. My iPod plays that way perfectly, though due to an apparent difference in the dock connector between the iPod and iPhone, the iPhone doesn't.

If you're playing via the headphone socket and the cable is securely connected, then you should not have a problem, but setting your stereo to CD will make it look to the internal CD for a source, not the external cable.

Thank you.
I had tried that, but it doesn't work. I tried pressing the CD/AX button on the dashboard, but nothing happenned. I have an auxilliary cord, with Apple adaptor so it fits snugly into the Iphone. On my AX cord, both ends look the same and fit into the earphone jack and then into the car AX jack. I am not sure whether I have the wrong cord.

My iPhone plays perfectly well in my car stereo system.

There are a few ways to play any iPod through your car stereo system, which most people know, but I have always preferred the straight-forward A/V method:

1) Buy a cable that connects to the AUX input of your stereo (where you buy it depends on the make of your stereo, but Best Buy and others have good options); the other end of that cable is usually RCA (the red & white female connectors).

2) Buy a standard "mini to RCA" cable (sold at ANY electronics store); the "mini" side goes to your ipod, and the RCA side goes to the connector you bought for the stereo.

3) Set your stereo to AUX and you're set.

This may sound like too much, but it's not. In the end all you have is a short cable in your car that you can plug to the headphone jack in your iPod. This works with ANY iPod, iPhone, or any MP3 player for that matter, because it is completely independent of the dock and other brand-exclusive features. It is just "straight A/V". It's the best.

True, though it's worth adding that the headphone socket on the iPhone is recessed and that 'standard' min-jacks don't push far enough in to connect. A thinner plug body is needed than on the iPod (or an adapter made for the iPhone of course).

It's the best.

It's the simplest, and least troublesome with an iPhone for sure! Best... well not necessarily. The dock connector feeds uncorrected, un-amplified and volume independent audio which on good audio systems will usually result in better quality sound (less background noise, lower distortion). It's a bit moot however with the iPhone if our existing dock connectors won't feed ANY audio!!

Thanks everyone. I finally got it to work, but not without going to Lexus.
The trouble was, my AUX cord was not fully pushed into the car jack.
I felt very silly, but it is hard to see, under the arm rest.
Also, thought you should know that a standard AX wire will not fit neatly into the IPhone ( it does in the IPod), because it is recessed. You have to purchase an adapter. You can get it on line from Apple, or elsewhere for $10.

By the way, Lexus told me to set my maximum volume on the Ipod portion of IPhone to a little less than max, or it could possibly blow the car speakers, even if I don't listen to the music at max. That sounded a bit complicated, because I thought my volume w/ for max on sound, but that was for the phone, You have to go into IPod configurations to do this, and then adjust the volume, through your car, or on your IPhone. You can still adjust the volume through your car or on your device.

Well i purchased a kingston cable that allows you to plug into the cigarette lighter and choose a radio station.

The iPhone ask you if you want to turn on airplane mode and you select no and then the phone will play through your car stereo without any problems!

Works perfectly, now i'm taking the iPod i bought yesterday back to the Apple store.

Sam

P.s.- thanks for your help.
