Error: -bash: curl: command not found ?

I have successfully installed ruby using terminal commands, but for unknown reasons I can no longer access the commands curl, sudo, and many others. I would prefer to figure out what i did to make these commands not available and fix that, but i would also appreciate directions to install the individual opensource files such as "curl-28.0.3" from http://www.opensource.apple.com/darwinsource/10.4.9.x86/. I am a new terminal user, so any and all help is truly appreciated.

Interesting. Thanks for clarifying—details always help. On my installation, the installed version is ruby 1.8.2 (2004-12-25) [powerpc-darwin8.0]. Surprising that you had 1.8.5 installed on your machine. The most likely reason for the inability to run standard commands (BTW, what error messages did you get) is that you've change your $PATH variable (default should be /bin:/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/sbin:) or moved them out of /usr/bin/ where at least sudo and curl live.
