I also had this problem and have been monitoring this forum for an answer. It finally occurred to me that my Outbox was not always visible. I guessed maybe it is only visible when you send an e-mail when you have no service? I tried repeating that and viola - Outbox appeared, including the problem e-mail that has been stuck in "unsent" mode forever. I was able to delete it - no problem. I reported my scenario to Apple - I think it's a bug.
I had the same thing happen on my POP earthlink account. I found that turning off the particular Mail account in settings that had the stuck email. Relaunch mail and then turn the account back on. The email was cleared. The second question that I have is why the mail was able to be delivered. The only unusual thing is that it had a 5MB file attached.

FYI - this is the Mail, Contacts and Calendar discussions area for the iPhone only so unless this has something to do with the iPhone's email application, you are monitoring the wrong discussions area for an answer.

The Outbox with the Tiger Mail application is only visible when a message cannot be successfully sent for whatever reason.
If you are unable clear this message from the Outbox - deleting this message or transferring the message to the account's Drafts mailbox, try the following.
Quit the Mail application first and using the Finder go to Home > Library > Mail > Mailboxes > Outbox.mbox.
Delete the Outbox.mbox folder and empty the Trash. This will also delete the problem message within.
Launch Mail and a new Outbox.mbox folder will be created automatically by Mail within the Mailboxes folder and this should resolve the problem with this problem message.
