lost sharing with OS X from OS 9 computers after updating to 10.4.10

I lost sharing with our OS X G5 from OS 9 G4 computers after updating to OS X 10.4.10. I can log on to the OS X from both appletalk and over TCP/IP on the OS 9 but when I try to copy from or to the OS X the connection shuts down. I have already stopped the firewall that 10.4.10 started after the update.

Any ideas?

1.8 GHz powerpc g5, Mac OS X (10.4.10), OS 9.0.4 G4

You're not missing something... OSX.4.x IS! 😟

OSX.4.x lost the file transfer ability of Appletalk... 10.1.5 thru 10.3.9 had it!

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301183

With OS9 set with Appletalk to using TCP/IP, and or Chooser>AppleShare+IP, you can connect to the 10.4.8 machine.

Another solution is OpenDoor's $39 Shareway IP, (some OS7, 8, 9 releases had a limited version included)...
http://www.opendoor.com/shareway/

Which makes OS9 Tiger compatable to at least 10.4.8.

And with the limited version I can copy one way from either side... can't remember if it's Read or Write at the Moment, but the other way will freeze the OS9 machine after a bit of transfer, then give a disconnect warning on Tiger. 😟

Haven't tried 10.4.10 with it yet... I have work to do despite OS9 being considered dead by SJ.

You should be able to connect FROM any Mac running 7.5.3 through 9.2.2, provided its AppleShare chooser extension provides a "Server IP Address" button. Clicking this button will force the connection to be via IP, not AppleTalk. If you just try to connect without specifying the IP address, a 10.4 Mac will not show up in the list of available servers.

10.4 Macs ability to share its files via AppleTalk, and their ability to understand File Sharing via AppleTalk, have been removed to make room for Intel file protocols.

Make room? Intel file protocols?

If you own an Intel Mac, you can initialize its Hard Drive with Intel/Windows formats as Native formats.

'make room" was probably not the best choice of words. The daunting complexity of modifying all the existing software to handle Intel/Windows protocols as Native protocols, in addition to all the existing Apple, Internet, and Server protocols, without breaking anything, and getting it all tested and working properly is enormous. It is not surprising that some protocols (probably thought to be the least used) would be eliminated. Eliminating AppleTalk-only File Sharing isolates only pre-7.5.3 Macs.

As I mentioned above, there is a built-in mechanism for File Sharing FROM 7.5.3 and later Macs using IP, although it is a little obtuse.

A similar elimination happened at OS 8.0, when support for single-sided MFS diskettes was dropped with the first introduction of the new HFS+ Extended format, fully functional in OS 8.1.

Are you saying you can R/W files OS9<->OSX.4.10 both ways?

You are supposed to be able to Mount shareable 10.4 Disks and Folders (for which you have proper Read/Write permissons, of course) on the 7.5.3 through 9.2.2 desktop, and then proceed to drag and drop files BOTH WAYS. If you cannot, something is not working as specified (or you do not have proper Read/Write permissions).

(can only read files either way though, writes bring everything down).

That is not how it is supposed to work. Do you get any error message with that?

I have no trouble connecting and/or mounting, but plenty of people have the same R/W problems between MacOS and OSX.4.9+, (kkelly is the 1st I've ever heard that COULD do it)... OS9 Machine will freeze/lockup, the OSX machine will BeachBall and eventually say Server Disconnected, (or close to that). HDs on both will most likely need repair afterwards, Yet getting/reading a file either way works, (unless I have it backwards... haven't tried it in awhile, since Tiger is not needed to accomplish my tasks, where OS9 is, and Panther does just fine).

(And I think "stock" systems couldn't do it... AppleShare, or Shareway IP was needed, iirc)

I realize it's an enormous job, but even more impossible if you pull your best workers to work on a Phone.:-(

It gets worse. From an 8.5 iMac to 10.4.10, very small files (under 50kbb or so) copy OK, but anything larger "unexpectedly closes the connection". Copies the other direction work fine. And, of course, the iMac can't be contacted (although it can be seen) from the OS X computer as the AFP protocols aren't compatible. This is a very serious bug, which I hope Apple will promptly fix. For me, the only cure (critical database files function from the iMac) is to set up another computer on the network on OS 9, make backups to that computer, then "forward" the backups to their proper location from the OS 9 computer. Talk about inelegant! For single files (no .zip facility on OS 8!), using Fetch to ftp the file to the main server computer works fine (though it's impossible to put it in the proper place; that has to be done manually after the upload is made).

After the same upgrade, I was no longer able to access my older 8.6 machine from my 10.4 eMac. (AppleShare errors).
A couple of work-arounds:
Since I can still access the eMac from the older machine, I have been using Stuffit to compress files and transfer them to the eMac, otherwise the transfers fail.
To transfer the other direction, I can access the eMac from the old Power PC by using ftp via Internet Explorer, and can transfer any size files to the old machine using this method.

This is a known bug with 10.4.9. See http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=4380220#4380220 for "How to Install Just Apple File Server" for the workaround with 10.4.9.

You need to get the 10.4.8 update from Apple, and get 3.1.4 AppleFileServer.app out of it with Pacifist.

Apparently Apple did not see fit to fix this in 10.4.10. Boo hiss.
